NEC MultiSync EA232WMi Monitor

4 August 2011
  • Conclusion: All told, this monitor is suitable for a broad range of work, including design and visualization. Attention to ecological considerations and the high quality make it an excellent product, and the suggested retail price of $299 makes it a great buy. Highly Recommended.

  • Conclusion: NEC EA232WMi has many similarities to the predecessor EA231WMi . It has the same ergonomic stand with height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustment and the same joystick for easy navigation in the on-screen menus. The bezel is matte which is a plus in my book, too. The out-of-box picture quality was fairly accurate and so was the sRGB mode but we needed to tweak a few settings in order to get a better result. EA232WMi has good color gradation and shadow detailing, too.
  • Pros: Picture quality, Shadow detailing, Ergonomic stand and matte bezel
  • Cons: Black level, Backlight bleeding, 16:9 aspect ratio

  • Summary: Affordable 23in screens are easy to find, but the NEC MultiSync EA232WMi is a very different story - a high-quality 24-bit IPS panel with LED backlighting, yet still available for under £300.

  • Conclusion: I suppose the main question about the EA232 is going to be - how does it compare to the original EA231 model? Well the answer is - pretty similarly! The design and features are the same and it was good to see NEC have not done away with some of the extras they had introduced on the original model, namely the auto brightness control, DisplayPort interface and integrated speakers.
  • Pros: Improved black depth and contrast ratio compared with original EA231WMi, Fairly good backlight uniformity from the sample we had, improvement compared with EA231WMi, Low input lag and moderate responsiveness
  • Cons: Lacking some interface options such as HDMI, Although offering a decent range, dynamic contrast is very slow, Responsiveness not quite in keeping with other modern screens
