Review: Affordable Dell S2740L display compromises on resolution
16 October 2012
Conclusion: The Dell S2740L has some good things going for it. Its IPS panel gives it a wide viewing angle, its glossy screen helps to give photographic images depth, and its LED backlighting conserves some energy and space. The fairly low resolution might be desirable for some people, but it makes screen elements too large for me to want to use the S2740L as a desktop-computing screen. Pros: Very good viewing angle, Displays smooth gradients, LED backlight
Excerpt: LCD monitors have taken over the market and CRTs have been replaced by them over the years. They were once considered to be expensive replacements, but as LCD technology has become mainstream, we’ve seen prices collapse. Full HD 22-inch monitors are priced under Rs. 10,000 and 24-inch models are just over that price mark. Of course, larger is better in many cases, so the only big monitor option users have is 27-inch models.
Conclusion: The Dell S2740L is an attractive, stylish and well-built 27-inch monitor which offers a quality, glass-fronted IPS panel at a reasonable price. It also enjoys excellent controls, an intuitive OSD and a few extras like a built-in USB 2.0 hub. However, its pretty stand lacks adjustability, its menus and panel quality don’t provide for colour-critical work, and its glass front causes annoying reflections.
Conclusion: If you're looking to move up to a big screen monitor and have an eye for style, the Dell S2740L is a compelling choice. Its IPS panel technology delivers excellent colour quality and bright, sharp HD imagery, and the picture looks great from any angle. Moreover, it won't strain your budget and can actually help save money on your utility bill.
Pros: Sleek design, Great colours and viewing angles, Energy efficient, Reasonably priced
Cons: Reflective screen, USB ports are hard to reach
Conclusion: At first glance some may erroneously assume that Dell’s new S2740L is geared towards people that put form before substance. Well we’ve got news for you. It may feature an achingly beautiful design and a sleek profile but this new monitor series sure has some performance chops backing up those supermodel looks. The S2740L is able to run with many of the best monitors but it takes some work to get decent image quality.
Conclusion: If we look at the performance of the Dell S2740L first of all we were left mostly with pretty positive feelings. The default setup was pretty good overall, especially when you consider the low cost of his model. It was also nice to see an accurate coverage of the sRGB colour space from the backlight without any oversaturation problems. Black depth and contrast ratio were reasonable but we were a little disappointed that CR didn't reach a bit higher really.
Pros: Good to see some additional extras included like DVI, USB and VESA mounting support, Very low input lag for gaming, PWM not used for backlight dimming
Cons: Contrast ratio not quite as high as we'd hoped, Some dark overshoot issues with pixel response times, Very reflective screen surface which may not be to everyone's liking
Pros: Very good viewing angle; displays smooth gradients; LED backlight
Excerpt: Dig deeper, though, and the reason for its attractive price becomes apparent. Yes, the Dell S2740L does use high-quality components, but the resolution is considerably lower than that of Dell's own U2713HM or of Apple's LED Cinema Display review .
