Cons: Aafter selecting the preferences options as per OS 10.5.7 system help cannot send or receive faxes. A fair bit of on-line research still has not turned up the information I need to make the computer/modem combination send or receive faxes.
Summary: We've been using the apple usb modem for about 2 months now and our only complaint is that it often won't connect on a managed account, but like I said above, that is probably more a problem with the OS (Leopard) than with the modem itself. On the non-managed account it works perfectly.
Pros: compact design, modem on hold feature
Cons: trouble dialing up on managed accounts (I'm still unsure if this is a modem problem or an OS problem)
Summary: The days of external telephone modems has returned, apparently because the majority of people buying a new Mac have moved from dialup to broadband Internet. A Mac-to-phone connection is still useful for automated phone dialing from Address Book and for fax send & receive. The Apple USB Modem is trivial to install (just plug it in) and use (no configuration).
Summary: I purchased two external USB based modems to try on a G4 Mac Mini, the Apple USB Modem (MA034Z/A) and the Best Data Smart One series Modem (56USBPMAC). Overall, the Apple USB modem is a winner. It is small, unobtrusive, and gets very good through put. I averaged around 50k on this modem using Apple's standard external modem script. The modem consistently had better connection and through put speeds than the Best Data modem.
Pros: Size, style, performance.
Cons: Must be connected to a USB port on the computer, not via a hub.
Summary: Apple stopped putting internal modems in their newest computer. I have a MacBook that I take on vacation in Vermont where I don't have a wireless or broadband connection where I stay (although I can always get one nearby, there's nothing like having access RIGHT THERE where you're staying!) I was a bit concerned about using a dial-up service, but this modem works really well!
Excerpt: "This modem was introduced by apple after the 56k modem was dropped from the October 12, 2005 Revision of the iMac G5. It is a combined 56 kbit/s data modem and 14.4 kbit/s fax modem which also supports V.92, caller ID, wake-on-ring, telephone answering (V.253), and modem on hold. The moden itself happens to be manufactured by Motorola and all OSX systems above Tiger version 10.4.3. have the driver pre installed. Its use is very simple, as ...
