Summary: I loved this microwave until last week. Something malfunctioned within the door latch so even when the door is closed the heating element does not function. My husband has always been bothered by how noisy it is to shut the door so perhaps it was faulty from the start. Needless to say, in less than a year and a half a nearly $200 microwave is useless. I expected more from Panasonic.
Summary: We bought a Panasonic NN-SD797S microwave back in October 2011 and it has completely stopped working after moderate use. From the beginning the door had required a hard push to close which was quite annoying. However, now the door mechanism has completely failed( July 2013.) My wife called couple of local appliance repair shops, and they all said don't bother repairing this unit.
Summary: I was skeptical when I was reading the reviews on amazon when I purchased this unit back in December 2011 mostly because of the discrepancy between the 1 star and 5 star reviews. I thought to myself that I couldn't be the ones so unlucky to somehow land a bad unit, right? I was dead wrong. My experience with the NN-SD797S has been a nightmare. The unit lasted about 7 months of regular home usage until suddenly it decided to stop working altogether.
Summary: This microwave just quit working today. There is a problem with the door locking mechanism and sensors. It says to close door even when the door is closed. The door doesn't seem to latch properly. I bought this in August 2011 and today is December 22, 2012. The warranty is over since it has already been a year. My Whirlpool lasted 15 years before I bought this. All the bells and whistles on this thing is worthless unless it can cook.
Summary: "This Panasonic Genius Prestige Microwave is smaller than the other unit but the reviews are just as positive. Great Cooking Performance, Sturdy Construction and Clever Design Choices (like the dial controls) made this a real well-reviewed appliance. Customers were very satisfied with this model to point of calling it "perfect". A great choice for a mid-size model.
Pros: Great Cooking Performance, Sturdy Construction and Clever Design Choices
Summary: The Panasonic Prestige has a double hook in the door that slides up and down when locking shut. There is a "very" thin bracket inside the door that holds the sliding hook into position. After a few thousand closings (a couple years worth), the bracket fails. It is an extremely thin bracket that can't possibly stand up to the stress of supporting the hook.
