Summary: The unit started to spontaneously arc. Naturally, the gas line to the house is broken due to construction on a adjoining property and this microwave was my only source of warm food during this newest Polar Express event. The interesting bit this morning was nuking coffee and seeing sparks rising out of the little trap door near the light. The acrid smell of burnt metal permeates the kitchen. This arcing comes after 8 months of light use.
Summary: We bought this thing REALLY cheap at another store. We use it to heat my meals (usually 4 minutes) and coffee (1 minute). Water accumulates inside the oven, so we have to dry it after each use. I read about the turning itself on trick, but ours hasn't done that (yet). If it does, it's toast. Its a convenient little gadget for us, so I hope it behaves itself.
Summary: Turning itself on? Bizarre. I don't think that's happened to me. I am not a big microwave person. I use it to heat up my coffee and that's about it. That said, it came with the house and I'd like something that looks more sleek.
Summary: ***UPDATE 4/12 (thanks to another reviewer) To see my uploaded photo of the damage the fire caused, Click on my name (reviewer) and then choose the image tab*** Avoid this brand at all costs, and if you already have one, return it! If you do a Google search for 'magic chef microwave turns itself on' you will find dozens and dozens of complaints and reviews where consumers have this exact issue. This appliance will literally turn itself on.
Summary: I have owned this for less than 3 years and it has had very light use, a couple minutes a day, and it's now dead. Stay away from Magic Chef if you want something to last. I have another brand in a different area of my house and it's going strong after 25 years.
