Sony NWZ-S610

1 September 2008
  • Summary: The Sony NWZ-S610 series Walkman doesn't bring anything striking or new to the table, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a quality MP3 player with nice extras and a killer battery life. Plus, Sony got rid of SonicStage--the best news ever.
  • Pros: The Sony NWZ-S610 series features a compact design with a high-quality feel and an ample screen. The user interface is intuitive, and there are plenty of features to choose from, such as an FM radio and photo and video playback. No more awful SonicStage software: this Walkman is a PlaysForSure device supporting subscription tracks as well as unprotected WMA, MP3, and even AAC files. The player offers good sound quality and an excellent rated battery life.
  • Cons: The Sony NWZ-S610 series doesn't offer any exceptional new technology, and there are cheaper competitors that offer the same features.

  • Excerpt: As portable music players get smaller and smaller, manufacturers are paradoxically trying to incorporate as many features into them as possible. The big question is: can they sustain all the functionality and still offer the quality you’d expect for the price? A good example that will help us answer that question is the Sony NWZ-S616F Walkman Video MP3 Player. Form Factor When it comes to the design of a music player, personally I’ll admit I’m a stickler for style.

  • Summary: Sony's decision to discard their proprietary ATRAC format and clunky SonicStage software on the NWZ-S616F is a blessing. An excellent interface, good battery life and video playback make this a solid choice if you are after a compact music player.
  • Pros: Drag and drop file transfer, user interface, sound quality, search function
  • Cons: Included headphones, screen a little small for video

  • Pros: Windows media player, Radio
