If you are trying to find a high storage, high fashion music player with a great battery life and features that run into minimalism, the Sony NW-HD5 may be just what you’re looking for. This compact player holds a whopping 20GB of music, and is one of the easiest players to use. It has a durable case and great sound that is characteristic of Sony products, and was designed with the G-Sensor technology that protects the hard drive by lifting the head before any damage is done to the player from being dropped (although the jury is still out on whether this technology works or not).

One of the great features of this player is the large, readable screen—it has plenty of room (1.8 inches) for large type and reversible color. The design of the NW-HD5 shows that Sony listened to customer feedback; the buttons are all on the front of the player, as opposed to on top and bottom. The menu and navigation are intuitive and reasonably simple, and it’s easy to search for and find song. And although one might think that 48 play list icons are going to be too much to remember, they actually help since the play lists can’t be renamed (which is one mark against the NW-HD5).

Another drawback to this unit is the downloading. You can’t simply download a collection of songs at the same time. You must add the tunes manually, and that can take some time. It could also use some better equalizer capabilities and to support MP3 formats better. Transferring music to the player is also a tad slow, and Sony could pick up the pace a little by allowing users to use something other than SonicStage to transfer music. However, even with these detractors, the 30 hour battery life is an enormous advantage, and depending on the price at which you find this unit, could make all the difference in the world to you.
