Summary: This was money well spent. Would be great purchase for college students, reporters or anyone who needs to record conversations. Sound quality is crisp and clear, far better than any cassette or microcassettes that I used for years as a print reporter. Get the external microphone as well: Sony ECM-DS70P.
Worked as long as the warranty was in effect and then stopped working completely

Summary: The recorder stopped working completely after about 3 years of use. It is completely "dead" and does not respond to anything. When I called customer support at Sony, they offered to replace it for about 60 dollars. The repair would not be covered and replacement would not be free because the recorder was no longer under warranty.
Summary: Some of my college classes covered LOTS of material in a SHORT amount of time. I would sit in the first 5 rows and use this at my desk so I can go over it later with my book to get more depth. The batteries lasted a long time and the quality of sound was fabulous. The only thing that affected the sound was if I shuffled lots of papers on my desk or if I had the recorder by a projector.
Summary: Used it everywhere. It is more sensitive than I thought. USB really practical. A little smaller in size would be better but I love almost everything about it. One problem I had once or twice is the file corruption which requires formatting and the lost of everything that has been recorded.
Summary: My ICD-UX71 died shortly after the warranty ran out. I did not drop it or abuse it. I liked the simplicity of it, but I replaced it with an iPod Touch and I find I much prefer the iPod Touch. It's much more fully featured without being excessively more complicated.
Summary: I ordered this recorder so I could use it for class lectures for my college classes. I have had it for about a month now and I am very happy with it. I picked this recorder because it has a USB port which allows for super easy transfers to my computer. And I have been able to use it successfully with both Apple computers and non apple computers.
