SanDisk Sansa c250

The SanDisk Sansa c250 is a flash memory-based portable digital audio player designed and created by California-based SanDisk Corporation. It can be used to play audio files, listen to the radio, as well as store and view images.

The player is available in black, blue, red, and pink. It measures 3.1 x 1.3 x 0.6 inches and weighs approximately 1.6 ounces. It is available only in a 2 gigabyte capacity that can store up to 1,000 songs. This can be expanded using its slot for microSD cards.

The SanDisk Sansa c250 features a 1.4-inch color LCD display that supports up to 64,000 colors. A blue-lit multi-directional navigator button is available at the right part of the player. This button directs all the playback functions. A separate menu button is also available at the lower right portion of the player. The volume controls are located at the top of the player and the record and hold buttons are at the bottom.

The player powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion 530mAh-capacity battery that lasts up to 15 hours of continuous music playback.

Audio

The SanDisk Sansa c250 comes equipped with an FM radio. For playing audio files, it supports the most common formats today including MP3, WMA, WAV, and protected WMA DRM. The player can display album art or photo thumbnails as well as song information stored in the files’ ID3 tags.

Images

Recording

In addition to FM recording, the player supports voice recording which can be done through the built-in microphone.

Review Summary

The Sansa c250 is part of the c200 series of music players, and comes with voice recorder, photo capability (which is not great but acceptable), a user-replaceable battery (which is also rechargeable), and a slot for adding memory. The navigation is very user-friendly and the price is quite reasonable— $79 for a 1GB player and $99 for 2GB. The screen and viewing is not considered to be superior quality, however, and in general the device is more for those who are new to MP3 players. Although one complaint is that the interface is too plain and screen quality substandard, the simplicity could be an advantage to those new on the scene.

Although it’s an inexpensive unit and pared down to a degree, the player has some nice capabilities, such as drag and drop music downloading, play list management, and folders for music. The c250 used to have an FM radio tuner, but SanDisk discontinued it in this model; if having and FM tuner is important, you will need to check out another music player. And regardless of the little extras for such a reasonable price, the Sansa c250 has some disadvantages, one of those being the sound quality. Generally the sound is somewhat dimensionless and the bass needs a good boost. Using head phones other than what ships with the c250 helps some, but the sound is still too treble.

For all the features in the Sansa c250, the price is good, however. It has user-replaceable rechargeable batteries, simple navigation, a moderate voice recorder, and some level of music management. 1GB and 2GB may not hold a whole library of music, but it can get you by for awhile. So the Sansa c250, despite its drawbacks, is priced correctly and actually offers a few little extras. The c200 series is a good choice for the young who are just getting their first players, but if you are a more experienced music player consumer you may want to consider a higher end product.
