Although the c100 series was made for the budget-conscious, these models still offer album art and a nice menu system with icons. The screen can handle basic photos, but the screen is small and you have to convert the photo with a special Sansa application before you can see it. This series has good tactile control features and a dedicated button for volume control. Even so, there are some disadvantages to these units, one being a rather chintzy plastic housing and a short battery life. The FM radio recording and voice recordings are also substandard, but in light of the many features the device has, it may not be that big of a problem for the price.
Music organization is one of the better features of the Sansa c100s, and you can browse your selections by song, album, artist, or playlist. Thumbing through the files on a display that only shows three tune names at once can be a pain, though, and it could use an equalizer. However, the tuner and autoscan are well done. Another of the features worth mentioning is the ability to view photographs and listen to music at the same time. If you’re considering this model, though, remember that the battery life is short, and the batteries are not rechargeable. You will only get 15 to 20 hours out of the c100 AAA batteries, so be prepared to replace a lot of them.

The SanDisk Sansa Express MP3 player is a good device to consider given its great sound, direct USB connection and small size. This inexpensive flash memory player comes in 1GB or 2GB sizes and appears as a USB flash drive. It plugs directly to your computer through a USB port--great for those who don't want to worry about carrying a USB cable--and the memory of the Express is expandable via a microSD card slot. The Express in an entry level MP3 player much like others in its budget price range. The build quality is mediocre with a light toyish feel and button tolerances that are a bit off. But at the same time it can take quite a beating. The sound quality is okay, but is nice to have 5-band equalizer to give it an extra tweak. Yes it sounds pretty unmoving; however, the Express has two qualities that I think give it an edge in its price class: direct USB connection and a... Read more
It’s a shame that the c140 has such a chunky, fished-out-of-the-cereal-box body; its brains are fairly smart. The menus are intuitive, and the ability to toggle between Windows Media Player syncing and drag-and-drop transfers allows you to manage protected and unprotected files separately (they all show up in the library). Sadly, the 1.2-inch color screen was among the worst for viewing pics, which were dim and smudgy. Read more
Used two seperate machines both less than a year old. When it eventually did start comms, it locked up immediately after. The problem could be with the player or with Sandisk's decision to rely on MS Media Player (mandatory) for the interface. With only minor modifications, I think an empty cere al box might make a better MP3 player than the "too expensive at any price" SANSA c140. ... Read more
