If you are considering the Samsung YP-D1 MP3 player, make sure you don’t mistake it for your cell phone. Since Samsung manufactures a lot of cell phones, this is to be expected one could suppose, but this music player does not second as a mobile phone. The device comes with 1GB and 2GB variations, and offers a camera (complete with zoom) for still and video shots as well as playback features. The wide range of features make the size and shape even more unbelievable—it’s about the same size and dimensions of the iPod Nano and has a little larger screen. In addition to all its duties, the YP-D1 also has a microphone input, jack for a head set, and a small speaker.

Because this is a small device, the buttons are also small—often too small for anyone with large hands and fingers. Another complaint is the lag time between pressing the button and the camera actually taking the shot. Regardless, the camera seems to produce fairly good quality shots, good enough to print on photo paper. There are also other neat features with the YP-D1; you can tune in to FM stations (and record them as well) and there is also a mic for voice recording. If you want to transfer your subscription music to this player, simply use Explorer’s drag and drop capability and your YP-D1 will arrange the tunes in folders and playlists according to your preference.

Like many other music and video players, the YP-D1’s packaged ear buds are seriously lacking. A combination of upgraded head phones and changing equalizer settings helped immensely, and you can choose equalizer presets or create your own. The battery lasts about 20 hours plus for music and around 7 hours for video. Considering all the nice additions to this player, keep in mind that if you only need a music player, you could probably save money by looking at other models.
