The Opus is another solid effort from Philips, its conservative looks, slow start up time and merely adequate video performance notwithstanding. In its favour it produces a very good sound, is extremely easy to use, has a very fine FM radio, decent format support, comes bundled with a pair of earphones that you don't need to immediately replace and doesn't cost the earth. A decent but not overwhelmingly impressive effort from Philips. The Opus looks great and is a pleasure to use; it's also temptingly priced. Unfortunately sound quality with the bundled headphones could be better, and that's a bit of a dealbreaker when you're an MP3 player. Read more

Despite some appealing features, like support for the BBC's iPlayer and FM radio recording, the Philips GoGear Opus is let down by a sluggish menu system and disappointing screen. Read more

    • Support for iPlayer downloads, Good sound quality, Can record from built-in FM tuner
    • Below-average screen, Boring design

T he GoGear range of media devices from Philips has fared quite well. They manage to deliver a fairly decent set of features in a relatively easy to use set up. I can’t honestly say I’m crazy about the packaging as the PMPs tend to look quite generic with no change until the Aria was launched. Read more

The Opus delivers excellent audio, but on all other counts it's slightly lacking. Most of all, it's low on excitement, and Philips really needs to address this if it's serious about staying in the PMP game. Read more

The good points are- the sound quality with the standard headphones is very good and the build quality seems very robust, sadly navigation is often very slow and sometimes you have no idea what it is doing, also don’t try to delete anything via the player as it takes up to 10 mins, delete through your computer or laptop, the most annoying thing is some mp3 albums appear to have missing tracks when they are played yet are there when the player is plugged in to the Read more

Having owned the 8Gb, SA6185 model of the GoGear I was waiting ever since Philips made the press release on 20th February this year to finally get my hands on this baby. Finally, and after a couple of delays, I have myself a brand new player, and I could not be happier. The menus respond noticeably faster than the 6185 I had before, and are quick to navigate through. Forget about silly fads like touchscreen. I mostly use mine in bed, in the dark. Read more

I recieved one of these as a present, and it lasted 3 days before I took it back. It kept freezing and wouldn't start again unless the reset button was pressed (which you need a pin or paperclip to do), and then all of your music would be deleted anyway. I bought a Sony Walkman E series instead, which is much better quality, easier to use and sounds great. Read more
