Summary: The sound quality from this device, with properly compressed music (i.e. something a bit better than MP3) is really quite amazing. It has great depth, stereo separation and clarity. As other reviewers have noted, the styling and quality of construction is a bit retro, it's very large and the battery life isn't great. But if you want good quality music, then you will overlook these shortcomings. But wait - there's more!
Summary: Definite improvement over more popular portable music devices, especially using FLAC encoded files. Drives headphones well without using an external amp. I use Beyerdynamic DT1350 and Etymotic ER-4P for travel. Even drives my Sennheiser HD-650s pretty well at home also.
Summary: Okay so you have a collection of Flac or Wave files - so this must mean you care about how your music sounds. This player won't get you any stares from the opposite sex. And it weighs about equal to a 1/2 dozen Ipod Nanos or Sansa Clips. But the sound quality will blow you out of the water. Songs that you would never bother listening to suddenly intrigue. The interface is something Elvis would think is low tech but simply create a folder and name it say ..
Summary: The sound from this device is so much then any apple product and also better then the colorfly c3. I had a colorfly and a ipod. The depth of sound is amazing and the stereo seperation. With a great pair of headphones such as sure e530 you will have no compromise sound anywhere. Compared to the hifiman hm-801 ($800) I rate the to be only slightly weaker. The seperarion and depth is there but I find the a bit harsher on the 601.
Summary: This unit is old school. It's built like a really top Quality 1980s unit. It looks like an old Walkman. A blast from the past. Don't let that fool you. It's very simple in its use. No fancy screens like an iPod. It's plays great music. You need to put flac files to get the most out of it. A great pair of headphones and your set.
Summary: Maybe the best player in categories of $ 200, despite its design and very good management, I do not regret buying it, but remember that you need to buy headphones at a cost of less than $ 100-150 (music was in Flac), to hear the difference in quality sound.
Summary: it has good sound quality, and still I'd like to mention, please do not mention any ipods or ipads or what sleeky stylish trash when it comes to quality. if anyone want to criticise any product that has a better real utility than apple, you have a long long way to go, evne cowon produce better sound quality than ipod.
Summary: I have owned Zune and iPod before. But, this player's league is way way above them. I haven't heard rockboxed clip+. But, u can read a lot of reviews in head-fi, this player has much better warm sound to the neutral sounding clip+. Supports flac which was very important for me. It plays the low resolution files well. I have many songs from 60s, 70s in 128kbps recording. This player almost produces a vinyl sound on them. I suspect the great amp in the player.
