Summary: This is for the HM-601LE which is a little different compared to the regular 601 in that it uses the HM-602's amp circuitry. I have to say that this is one of the best sounding portable hifi players I've heard and the best I've owned personally. The Philips TDA-1543 DAC (which is new old stock from the 90s) gives the music such a nice organic warm analog sound that I absolutely love.
Summary: The sound quality from this device, with properly compressed music (i.e. something a bit better than MP3) is really quite amazing. It has great depth, stereo separation and clarity. As other reviewers have noted, the styling and quality of construction is a bit retro, it's very large and the battery life isn't great. But if you want good quality music, then you will overlook these shortcomings. But wait - there's more!
Summary: As others have stated, the sound was great, when it is working. The majority of my ownership was spent re-booting, and re-setting, with some listening sprinkled in. Just out of warranty mine bricked, did nothing but turn it on! Took it outside and played hockey with it. I am tired of poorly designed, cheaply made, so-called high end audio products from China.
Summary: Definite improvement over more popular portable music devices, especially using FLAC encoded files. Drives headphones well without using an external amp. I use Beyerdynamic DT1350 and Etymotic ER-4P for travel. Even drives my Sennheiser HD-650s pretty well at home also.
Summary: Okay so you have a collection of Flac or Wave files - so this must mean you care about how your music sounds. This player won't get you any stares from the opposite sex. And it weighs about equal to a 1/2 dozen Ipod Nanos or Sansa Clips. But the sound quality will blow you out of the water. Songs that you would never bother listening to suddenly intrigue. The interface is something Elvis would think is low tech but simply create a folder and name it say ..
Summary: The sound from this device is so much then any apple product and also better then the colorfly c3. I had a colorfly and a ipod. The depth of sound is amazing and the stereo seperation. With a great pair of headphones such as sure e530 you will have no compromise sound anywhere. Compared to the hifiman hm-801 ($800) I rate the to be only slightly weaker. The seperarion and depth is there but I find the a bit harsher on the 601.
Summary: Pros: Superb sound ,especially from 24bit format Easy handling Line out , can be connected to any amp. High gain option ,might be use by not only by portable headphones Can be use form internal battery or 8V DC source Cons: Very vintage and cheap look/ design Battery last only form 4-6 hrs Several times got frozen and had to be reset by emergency button Considerable big and heavy ,not really pocket size For real audio fans , with good cans might give a lots of pleasure
Summary: Ive been using this unit for over a year now. You would have a hard time taking this away from me. About the same size as my cassette walkman from way back when. Simple and straighforward. I like the amp. section of this, most portable players take a nose dive when it comes to clarity and headroom, this delivers in spades. I am using with iGrado open air and love the sound. I primarily listen to lossless flac files created from my own cd library.
