On paper, Cowon's is distinct from what most would . It packs a curvaceous design, nary a single front panel button, an AMOLED display and a codec support list chock full of formats that audiophiles admire. Clearly, Cowon is aiming to appeal to portable media enthusiasts who are also sticklers for sound quality, with the core functionality consisting of only the basics that one would expect on a PMP. You probably can’t afford Sony’s gorgeous OLED telly but this high-class OLED PMP is within almost anyone’s budget. Arguably the best video and audio quality of any media player today, although not the best choice if you’re sitting on a pile of AAC or DRM tunes. Read more

The Cowon S9 is a solid player. The capacitive screen is a big improvement over the D2’s resistance type screen. On the face of the player a beautiful looking AMOLED screen graces the front and runs among the top screens on current portable devices. The sound quality is what we would expect from Cowon, excellent. The UI is fairly smart and its obvious Cowon spent some time on this, but it may not be intuitive to US buyers. Read more

Should you buy an S9 instead of an iPod Touch? If you want to play AVI, Flac or Ogg files then clearly the answer's yes. If you want to browse the web and play H.264 videos then no, the Touch is what you need. Still, despite the slightly smaller screen and lower resolution, the S9 is the better video player and it pumps out audio of an equally high quality. Read more

She’s got the look The S9 gives the look of an evolved D2+ geared to take on the iPod Touch. It’s got a nice curved rear and the smooth (not glossy) finish oozes class as does the rich brown colour. The S9 feels solid in hand, but not as solid as the iPod Touch. It has a capacitive touch display and to be honest this doesn’t work as well Apple’s display; furthermore, Cowon’s menu looks a little dated. It’s a slightly smaller display at 3.3-inches. Read more
