Could be better

Samson L., Newegg
16 September 2008
  • Summary: Its a fantastic device. I got it over the Archos because Cowon, unlike Archos, does not follow Apples product strategy. You know? Sell only the device and charge extra for necessary items that are normally considered standard on similar devices.
  • Pros: Very good screen. Amazing audio quality. Support for every video and audio format. Lot of input and output options. Great support, great accessories. Prompt firmware releases.
  • Cons: Battery life sucks. The battery life mentioned on Cowon's website is only true if you listen to WMA's and WMV's. I, like 90% of the world, listen and watch Divx and MP3. Battery life is half of what is advertised if you use those formats. I have to recharge once a day or else it dies half way thr...

It died

Brett W., Newegg
2 September 2008
  • Summary: Once again, Read the review of the 80 GB A3.
  • Pros: Don't let the title put you off. Yes my first one went into a white screen and thats all it would do. Newegg took care of the problem. ( read my review of the 80 GB A3)
  • Cons: It died. Manufacturing defect? I don't know. If everything was perfect, what would be the fun.

It's Cool

Brett W., Newegg
2 September 2008
  • Summary: There Jet software is not the best if your converting DVD type TV shows or movies. I would recomend Aimersoft Studio Pack. I bought a couple of others before this. They worked ok but had some motion artifacts. Do your own research.
  • Pros: It plays everything that I've put in it with no problems. The resolution is great, Audio is great. I would buy another one if I had to. In fact I did. (More in the cons)
  • Cons: I bought the 60GB version first. It lasted 3 days then the screen went into a bright white mode and that was all it would do. Newegg took it back and gave me a full refund because they didn't have the 60 GB in stock and didn't know when they'd get another one. So I took a chance and bought the 80...

Good system

Matthew T., Newegg
10 June 2008
  • Summary: Overall I'm very happy with it. It's one of the few products available that plays DIVX (and XVID) formats, which is what a lot of my video is in. Good sound and easy to carry around. The free NewEgg case that came with it is a joke, it's not even big enough for it. It's a sock.
  • Pros: Not too heavy, seems sturdily constructed, and it can read a ton of formats. I really like the screen as well, it's very crisp and clear. The 30GB hard drive holds a lot of songs and videos too. Battery life is nice as well (I'm averaging around 5 hours mixed video/audio usage).
  • Cons: Maximum display of 640x480, and it doesn't 'down convert' to a lower resolution, so if you have some hi-res video clips, it will just refuse to play them. This wouldn't be so bad, except that once it hits something it can't play, it won't play *any* video, so you have to reset it to get it to pla...

Does its job well.

Vidya J., Newegg
5 May 2008
  • Summary: Apart from that can't find anything to fault my awesome A3. Get a scratch-guard+DS Case combo, read the iaudiophile.net forums, make sure you dont want a Q5w and you'll get your money's worth
  • Pros: +Gorgeous 4 inch 800v480 16M color (wide) screen +Approx 5.5 hours of video and 9 hours of audio on a 5 hour adapter charge +Plays almost every video format, MPEG, XVid, DivX, H264 .. H264 top-line is not yet supported.. may get fixed. Subtitle, multiple audio tracks, stretch to wide-screen, zoom...
  • Cons: - H264-HP was advertised but not supported. Some MPEGs has issues with AV Sync. As on May 5 - Radio a bit weak Some people dont like the joystick.. but I have no issues at all... apart from possible wearout in the future.

Cowon rocks!

Anonymous, Newegg
26 March 2008
  • Summary: I bought this for my father last father's day. He uses it in the Sunday School class he teaches. We have had no problems with this thing. I would recommend Cowon.
  • Pros: You aren't stuck using it with specific software. It operates like any other hard drive. I can use it with Windows, mac, Linux... I absolutely LOVE that about it. I get sick of hardware that will only work with it's own software. Market hogs.
  • Cons: The case doesn't have a belt clip:( But that's about it, honestly!

the good does not justify the price you pay

Robert E., Newegg
19 March 2008
  • Summary: my experience with the A3 and Cowon's technical support with the litany of problems i had with getting "supported" capabilities/functionality of the A3 to work has left a large impression in the negative sense. i left a forum name in previous posts below (iaudiophile).
  • Pros: musically speaking i will tell you that once you get past the A3 pausing between songs (gaps) you'll love it more than anything you've owned prior (assuming it wasn't a Cowon product) or anything anyone you know will flaunt in your direction. the A3 blows everything out of the water when it comes...
  • Cons: on their website and on the box there are claims of HD and H.264 Main Profile and High Profile support. per their tech support the max res for such is 480p (720x480) which is not stated anywhere. after several points of communication with the A3 CPU's manufacturer (Texas Instruments) this seems u...

I love it!!!

Josiane A., Newegg
11 March 2008
  • Summary: If anyone is considering making this purchase, do it.
  • Pros: I love how you can record movies right from the tv, without the hassels of coding etc. The picture quality is great and the sound is great as well. I know that people seem to complain about the joystick, but I don't find it a bit frustrating or anything. I've had it for only a week now and I can'...
  • Cons: The only thing I wish it had, was more memory. It would be great if it had 160gb. But then again 60gb is more than enough

Great PMP

Anonymous, Newegg
28 January 2008
  • Summary: I did not buy this player at newegg, but I really love my Cowon A3. It's so great to be free from an ipod. I would suggest looking at this player. It's really nice to not have to encode video. I use it to replace burning DVDs (so I can skip the encoding), and just use the TV out on the A3.
  • Pros: This thing plays almost everything. It plays my flacs, oggs, mkvx, h.264s, and divx files, and it does more 0.o The screen is really nice, albeit a little too reflective. Sound quality does not compare to my 4th gen iPod. A3 blows it away. 10 band EQ, BBE, and 3d surround all sound nice, even on ...
  • Cons: As you all probably know, the "joggle" (AKA joystick), isn't the greatest input device, but it works. Also, USA firmware support is kind of weak. You can get the latest ones at iaudiophile. Cowon seems a little slow putting new firmware on the american site, but they seem to update it at least on...
