Although it’s one of the new kids on the block, the Scitec System’s Centrix MVP-120 can hold it’s own in the yard full of portable media players. It’s a handsome, elegant unit even if it is a little larger than most, and the joystick controls make it a versatile and easy to use. The unit also doubles as an external hard drive which allows other media files to be easily transferred directly to other folders. It sells for around $300 online, and competes well with other PMPs in its price class. However, due to the number of PMPs on the market, this one will have plenty of continuing competition.

The Centrix MVP-120 comes with a good serving of accessories. While initially this may seem like a lot of free extras, some of the quality lacks a bit. For instance, the ear buds don’t perform as well as you might like, and the plastic remote control Scitec System included is a little chintzy. But those two accessories perform, and one always has the option of upgrading these later. The carrying case, while being a bit clunky to deal with, is a well-padded, protective covering with an extra pocket. However, the best “extra” from the company is the screen cover—it’s a very hard plastic, and covers everything but the buttons. Although this unit has a problem with glare, like many PMPs, the playback is still smooth and clean. Audio playback is very clear.

Some of the things that could be improved are to make the entire PMP a little less unwieldy, add video recording, improve the voice recording, and make the screen a little more readable. All in all, though, this tough, solid PMP can hold it’s own with the big names, and as with anything else, the improvements may simply come with time.
