The first time you see an Archos Gmini XS 100, you may not believe it does all it says it can do, especially store 3GB of music (and also comes in 4GB and 6GB models). This hard disk memory is stable enough to use while exercising, according to Archos, and can also be used to store data as well as music via the USB. The unit is small and light, generally easy to use, and makes play lists and music organization easy. Although it doesn’t offer FM tuning or voice recording, the Gmini XS100 works with subscription music services and gives excellent sound quality.

It’s also an eye-pleaser, with a sporty, sleek profile and festive colors. Smaller than the iPod Mini, it gives the Apple device a run for its money on looks—it comes in blue, gray, black, and pink. The Gmini doesn’t have a lot of the features of other players, however—there is no FM tuner, voice recorder, organizer software, games, etc.—but those who want a high quality music player won’t miss those. Browsing your songs is easy, and you can sort by song name, artist, or album. As if that’s not enough, the Gmini offers equalizer presets, play list creation, bookmarks for songs, and your battery will last for about 12 to 14 hours.

A couple of improvements for the Gmini would be a higher volume and a better pair of ear buds. However, for most people shopping for music players these days, replacing the bundled headset is often a given, and they already have a set chosen or bought. There are many advantages to the Archos Gmini XS100, and it will definitely give some good competition to the Apple iPods. Except for the absent FM tuner, the other disadvantages aren’t even an annoyance in the face of the high quality and the rest of. the advantages of this music player.
