Great Device

Paul K., Newegg
27 March 2007
  • Summary: I don't think you can go wrong if you want a music player that can do a whole lot more. - P.S. Bought from Newegg, got a great price and fast delivery. Didn't need customer service dept. at all.
  • Pros: Flawless performance of every function I expected. Great music capability, and a blast on vacation. If your hotel room doesn't have a stereo, Ive found that most have TV's that you can plug the av cables into. It's never failed me in over a year, but I do take care of it. I ripped my whole CD col...
  • Cons: I don't feel that this unit has any cons - every device has limitations, no matter how much it costs. Things to be aware of: This device only plays/records divx format. You can get a divx plug-in and converter for free on the internet, just do a search. It's actually really easy to do. The contro...

A year later and still excellent.

Brandon Q., Newegg
27 February 2007
  • Summary: Extremely good product from Archos, I feel that it totally owns the i-Pod (other than in battery life). Have had it for over a year and it still works great. Never had any problems with it what-so-ever. The USB host port has come in handy at times for me as well.
  • Pros: Good Quality and very durable. I dont know how many times I've dropped it but it hasn't broken on me yet. I got this in December of 2005 and ave been in love with it ever since. The audio quality is great as well as video quality. The games for it are much better than the iPod's (but still are no...
  • Cons: Audio playback time is not all that good (10 hrs), doesnt support ogg format (linux user here... so this doesnt apply to most people), blurry still pictures, very very few accessories (but doesnt need many since all the fatures are packed in it), no flash for camera, limited on video formats.

Great device

Adam R., Newegg
24 February 2007
  • Summary: Except for battery life, it is better than the "i" video product (more functions, better button layout for 3rd party apps)
  • Pros: Sound quality excellent with good headphones. Video playback good. Button layout very nice for games. Camcorder pretty good in medium to high light levels. Comes with wires for video output to tv.
  • Cons: Battery life about 8 hours for music- 2-2.5 hours for video or games. Viewing angle for screen not great. Will not play music downloaded from a certain popular music service that begins with an "i".

User Review

Carolyn H., Newegg
1 December 2006
  • Summary: Obviously not meant to be a professional video recording tool. However, how many times have you thought "Wow, I wish I had a video camera with me..."? This is just that. 10 times better resolution on video and still pictures than any cell phone camera.
  • Pros: I have no complaints! You can create and save playlists right on the player, no PC necessary. Holds a lot of music, never freezes or jumps. A+
  • Cons: None

NES, Doom, Linux through simple exploit

Alan D., Newegg
30 October 2006
  • Summary: Super Mario Bro's 3, Kirby's Aventure, Tetris... Awesome!
  • Pros: Update to my review below: This player has now been hacked. by going to archopen dot org you can download an original nintendo emulator, the original FPS game Doom, and a linux front-end called MediOS.
  • Cons: According to internal diagrams of the 402cc, the microphone adapter actually has a video line-in channel, but it is not enabled. Not really a con, because it's not an advertised feature. Who knows, it may be hackable though! One downside of this player in relation to the NES emulator is that the ...

Archos, the best brand

Alan D., Newegg
23 October 2006
  • Summary: Everyone who has seen this little wonder has been amazed by it. Same price range as an iPod, but no DRM infection and it can be used as a fast hard drive. It can play Mophun video games, but not many are available to buy.
  • Pros: Solid design (I've dropped mine to asphault a few times), easy interface, good battery life, awesome video recorder/camera. Uncompressed 48kHz audio recording, direct-to-XviD video recording. Output to TV is great.
  • Cons: Can only play DivX/XviD movies, so you need to know how to use a converter (like the freeware VirtualDub and Xvid Codec). The battery does not charge throught the USB cable. When recording with the internal microphone you can hear the Harddrive click every minute for audio, and about every 20-30 ...

So Nice, Got it Twice!

Samantha T., Newegg
8 September 2006
  • Summary: I'll take this over a video ipod any day. My sister has a video ipod and tries to steal my archos all the time. Since I know how to take care of my player, its treating me well. I just ordered one for my friend, I know she'll enjoy it as well...
  • Pros: Its basically an external harddrive that can play back your movies and music. I really enjoy playing back my movies on my tv, the quality is really good. All my friends like the player as well.
  • Cons: An external speaker and a flash for the camera would of made the product too good to be true. But it's pretty good as is.
