For a 20GB capacity MP3 player, the Archos Gmini 202S is incredibly small. For a 20GB capacity MP3 player, the Archos Gmini 202S is incredibly small. This unit may not be a fashionista, but it’s highly functional and of excellent quality, making any comparisons to most of the other slick music players a waste of time—many other players are more handsome, but the Archos is usually the higher quality. Some of the reasons for its somewhat ungainly appearance is the large, well-lit screen, which contains much information and is easy to read, the large storage capacity, and a battery that lasts up to 12-14 hours.

The Gmini XS202 only has three buttons to control the menu choices, making operation simple but often requiring both hands. The buttons on the right and left turn the unit on and off, respectively, and then changes functions once the player is on. The middle button is the joystick-style control for navigation through the menu. The right button also serves to lock the device so that you don’t press a button accidentally while putting the unit down or while it’s in a pocket or purse. Although some don’t like the monochrome screen, it’s a small price to pay to save money on the unit.

One of the main complaints about the Gmini XS202 is the clunky feel of the unit itself, but many music players feel that way in the hand. Compared to many of the other players out there that are visual nightmares to read, the Gmini has a distinct advantage over the other large-storage music players. Another complaint is the poor quality head phones that ship with the device, but that is also true of many of the other players as well. Most people shopping for music players have resigned themselves to spending a few more dollars for a new set of ear buds or head phones.
