A classic track for a PMP with a problem staying upright, perhaps that's why all the publicity shots always show someone holding the Archos AV500? We put the DVR though it's paces and see if stacks up as a sensible purchase. Read more

The AV500 is a marked improvement over previous Archos efforts -- the experimental predecessors paying off with a truly desirable gadget. The screen is fantastic, the chassis is sleek and the features are plentiful -- only the interface disappoints on this gorgeous piece of modern gadgetry Read more

I would have given this device a better score and I really wanted to, for a while it surprised me with its abilities, I could lie in bed and stream video of just about any format from my laptop/server and it would perform the task with ease, that is when it could identify my network (that was a little buggy) sometimes it would just refuse to bring it up. The disk space is awsome and I had a nice collection of about 120 movies on it when it decided one night to die. Read more

I bought this about 2 yrs ago and it has worked perfectly. Outstanding picture and very user friendly. Downloads from DVR rapidly. Has good battery life. Much better than keeping up with portable DVD players and discs. Compact for travel. I have only had it "freeze up" once and I just held the off button down until it rebooted. Worked perfectly after that. Highly recommend. Hopefully price will come down as with all electronics that are new....still a good purchase. Read more

Paid: $40 on ebay, used. I bought this to use as a player. At the price, it sure beats and iPod. Since there is no ability to stream, the video is somewhat outdated. Battery life: 4-hour trip -- no problem playing mp3's Features -- Every thing I want. Design -- convenient for playing; but would like easier access to volume and setup features related to mp3. Very sturdy and good computer interface. Read more

I am extremely happy with my AV-500. Any video file that windows media player 10 can play can be translated, written, and played on the AV-500. Audio fidelity is excellent, and the USB mass storage controller makes it easy to pull files off of external USB devices. I also use this in my car and I have it integrated into my navigation system, and the remote is a must for stealth installation! Read more

    • Compatible with every video format I could find! Remote, single plug for IR/Video In/Video Out/Power/Sound. Control for external USB devices. Sound quality!

The Archos AV500 gives you a variety of features. It is a video player and a video recorder. In addition to that, it is equipped to play and record audio. The package comes with an A/V docking pod, a regular sized (full size) remote control and an earphone. With its eye-catching looks, it is available in 30 GB as was as 100GB. Even though it maybe able to fit into your pocket, it will leave it a bit bulgy. This LCD item has a 4-inch wide screen and compare to the others of its kind this is amazing. You will also be able to purchase many accessories to go along with this item.

A digital camera can be connected to it so that you will be able to view your photos through it. Then of course, you can connect it directly into your computer to down load the video or audio of your choice. As for the battery life, you are in for a steal. With up to about five hours of video time, you can not loose. As for the audio battery life it can go for about 45 to 50 hours. Added to that, the battery is removable. Therefore you can purchase a spare one if you desire. The fact that it comes with only a single loudspeaker is not too impressive, but by using the earphone, it will be advantageous. However, on the down side you will have to find something to prop this machine against if you are not holding it in your hands. The Archos AV500 comes with a well-detailed manual so that you will be able to take advantage of all the wonderful functions that this portable video player offers. Even though it is a bit on the pricey side, it is worth it.
