This generation of the mid-range of Apple’s portable media player product line comes in two storage capacities: 4 and 8 gigabytes. As with previous generations of the iPod Nano, it uses flash memory. The 4 gigabyte is available only in silver while the 8 gigabyte comes in pink, blue, green, black and red in addition to silver. The iPod Nano 3G is also the first Nano to support video playback.
Unlike the previous two generations which had a tall and slender profile, the Nano 3G is wider and shorter leading some to nickname it the iPod “fatty”. It now measures 2.75 x 2 x 0.26 inches. The change in profile was needed in order to fit a much larger screen for a better video playback experience. The screen is a 320 x 240 (QVGA) resolution 2" color LCD with LED backlighting that is noted for having the highest pixel density among Apple’s portable products including the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The third generation iPod Nano features a newer Operating System than its predecessors. The OS features a split display interface for better navigation, the inclusion of the Cover Flow style of browsing and a search function.
This portable media player does not have customizable equalizer settings but it does come with a total of 22 presets. It also allows for the creation of unlimited on-the-go playlists right on the device.
With the video and photo viewer, users can output videos and photo slideshows to their televisions. The photo slideshow also features simultaneous music playback.
Other features include games, read-only personal information manager (PIM) functions and a text viewer. Additional games can be purchased and downloaded from the online iTunes store. The PIM function supports syncing with Apple’s Address Book and iCal on Macs and the Windows Address Book and Microsoft Outlook 2003 on PCs.

Apple was faced with a unique dilemma when tasked with yet again remaking the iPod nano. How would it remake such a small player to support video without sacrificing the size or comfort of what was arguably its best-selling iPod of all time? In terms of hardware, the answer was surprisingly simple and works well. Software and build quality, however, may have bruised Apple's reputation, at least in the short term. Read more

Still, if you can clear these roadblocks, the Nano is still one of the most enjoyable flash music players around -- particularly for joggers or space-conscious travelers. It just needs a manufacturer with more respect for the design philosophies that worked so well in the past. Read more

the 3rd Gen Nano is great, (although I wish it had more storage..) my only other gripe is I can't find a way to have it randomize songs within a playlist. Read more
There's not much that can be written about the iPod that you don't already know. It's Apple so it has classy design, a solid and user-friendly interface, and works pretty much flawlessly. What I'd like to do is talk about the few quirks or shortcomings that I experienced with the iPod Nano 2G I owned (silver / 4GB model) up until last week. * Can something be too compact? * The small form factor of this iPod is awesome, except if you have bigger hands & fingers. I'm 6'... Read more
When I purchased this Ipod, it said "In good working condition" ... however, when I received it, the product details in the package said "does not hold charge" ... I can't plug it in to charge it, can't get my music in it ... not happy at all Read more
I bought this type of ipod firstly as a gift for my mum with a lovely inscription on it. Unfortunately, my mum felt it was too fancy for her. She has a more basic MP3 player that she doesn't want to part with. So I started using it for my daily walks and commute home on the train. I've not had any problems with the player. Its quite easy to put music on it and the functionality of selecting and playing is easy. I don't usually do more those basic functions. The ipod nano... Read more
