When it worked it was great.

JeremiahLahnum, Viewpoints
9 September 2012
  • Excerpt: I bought this Ipod two years ago and when I had it and it was operation it was great.  I enjoyed using it for music and podcasts and I took the thing with me everywhere.  I never really used it for video or games much even though I knew they existed.  It just wasn't what I was interested in using it for. As time wore on the Ipod began to do weird things.  First it stopped downloading the podcasts I was subscribed to automatically.

Defective Hardware

Overstock
15 August 2009
  • Summary: I bought this Ipod because it was about 30 dollars cheaper than at the store. From day one when I got it some of the songs it played had a skipping sound on them and other songs would skip to the next song at various times. I initially thought it was a defect of the songs I put in the Ipod and realized too late that the hard drive in the Ipod must have been damaged. Needless to say I don't think this would have been a problem on a new Ipod.

Not sure what went wrong with this one

D. V. Beck "DVB", Amazon
28 May 2009
  • Summary: You'll find much of what's always been great about the ipod classic here - lots of storage and an intuitive interface with crisp onscreen graphics. You'll also get some annoying problems, no extra charge. For example, spontaneous restarts. Particularly when shuffling, the ipod will occasionally shut down and restart, all by itself. Seems like a software issue, possibly with the OS. Can you please fix this, Apple?

already problems

James E. Steiner, Amazon
16 May 2009
  • Summary: Got this item on line and while it worked flawlessly for 6 weeks the thing now pauses for no reason (my old ipod did this too prompting me to replace it). Yes it's still under warranty and I suppose they would look at it but the trouble is the problem is intermittent and getting it fixed may be tough unless the tech knows what the problem is. My other complaint is itunes and the ipod runs poorly on MS vista.

Avoid - randomly pauses in the middle of songs - no solution from Apple

J. Vispoel, Amazon
10 March 2009
  • Summary: The subject summarizes it. We'll be grooving to a song, when all of a sudden the music stops for 2 to 10 seconds. It's very random - it can go 5 straight hours without pausing and then do it on 3 songs in a row. Replay the songs that it skips on, and it works fine. Hundreds of owners of this same model have this problem (do a Google search) and Apple hasn't solved any. They say all hard drive-based MP3 players do it.

Requires $100 in accessories to watch videos

Israel Holby, Amazon
19 January 2009
  • Summary: Unlike previous models, the classic now requires an Apple cable and Universal Dock in order to play video. Previously all you needed was a standard AV out cable but they changed the software so it will just displays a "please connect video accessory" message when trying to play video. This really rains on my parade as I was previously satisfied with the product.

Be careful, there are many well known bugs in the iPod classic

M. Hendawi, Amazon
3 July 2008
  • Summary: I bought the 160GB because I wanted another iPod for my car that could fit all my music. I eventually returned it to the Apple store and demanded a full refund, including the restocking fee. You can find lots of information about the iPod classic being extremely slow by googling "iPod Classic Slow".

Avoid if you have an older computer!

Fred Von Lohmann, Amazon
3 July 2008
  • Summary: If you have an older PC or Mac, avoid the iPod Classic and go for a previous generation of iPod. The new iPod Classics are serious CPU hogs when they sync with iTunes. On my 1.8ghz iMac G5, for example, syncing my iPod Classic 160gb takes 7 minutes, even when there is nothing new to sync. Throughout that time, my CPU is over 95%, according to Activity Monitor.

I pod disaster

Overstock
14 April 2008
  • Summary: This was the first luxery item that I purchased for myself in 5 years and I am so dissapointed in it I am ready to return it. It arrived in a plain box with out any instructions. The headphones are dirty and have something sticky all over them and now I find out that this model has a great possibility of having a virus. I am so up set what I thought was a bargin has actually cost me a lot of money and time trying to get the instructions and the parts that were missing.
