  • Excerpt: Apple has decided to take their iPods in the small, fast, hip direction. Not that the iPod Classic isn’t hip, but it definitely is the last of the feature-packed high-capacity iPods. Apple has taken everything that made the iPod famous in the first place and refined it in the Classic. Although it looks almost the same as the earlier versions of the iPod, the Classic still has the combination of features that sets the iPod above a crowd of sub-standard MP3 players.

Apple iPod Classic second generation

CNET
16 November 2008
  • Summary: The iPod Classic refines the formula that put the iPod on the map. Few can match its combination of storage capacity, battery life, and intuitive user interface.
  • Pros: The second-generation iPod Classic adds a new Genius playlist feature to its time-tested combination of music, video, podcast, audiobook, and photo playback.
  • Cons: EQ control is limited; some older iPod video accessories may not be compatible; the plastic screen is susceptible to scratching; users are required to use the latest version of iTunes, which may not work on some older computer systems.

Apple iPod Classic (80GB) Review

Digitaltrends
12 September 2007
  • Conclusion: The Apple iPod Classic is a nice evolutionary step in iPod design aimed at previous generation owners who require more storage capacity, or new owners who don’t want to pony up premium fees for less than premium storage. Granted, the unit’s new interface changes have been well thought-out and prove welcome additions, but do require some tweaking on Apple’s end in order to make the system more responsive.
  • Pros: Huge capacity; excellent sound quality; revamped interface
  • Cons: Sluggish/balky menus; no docking station included; requires iTunes 7

  • Conclusion: Although we're pretty certain that Apple will get around to fixing the hard disk lag issue in the future, it's a pretty obvious bug to overlook and mars Apple's reputation for ease-of-use and design panache. Also distressing is the video out issue, which on the face of it seems like a case of price gouging. Overall, though, the new iPod is good value at AU$349 for the 80GB unit and AU$479 for the 160GB model.
  • Pros: ... but marred by hard disk lag issues, Sound quality still, at best, mediocre, Cover Flow a case of form over function, New accessories required for video out
  • Cons: Huge storage (who really has 40,000 songs?), Good value, Anodised aluminium front feels like quality, Video and photos are bright and clear, Interface looks even slicker than ever ...

  • Summary: The name suggests more of the same but with more space and better value. Hard disk lag issues, video out controversy and just okay sound stop it from being a true classic though.
