Good for just for basic/occasional media playing
S. Grillo, Amazon
4 March 2010
Summary: If you are looking for a basic media streaming player this product is OK. The interface is also very basic and you have to navigate to the very lowest level of your directory structure to finally find the file you are looking for, so to play a DVD you have to navigate to the IFO/VOB files. I had a few issues in sharing directories from an XP PC and opened a call to Support Center.
Great Device, but unlucky when you update the firmware.

Summary: Great device, but a pain when you update the firmware. The first time I updated the firmware, I was unlucky and got the corrupted firmware (1.01.12). Amazon replaced the bricked model, now almost two months later, got the same model back and again the firmware states it is updating and is stuck on 0%. Customer service reps are in India and can only help to a limited degree. WD = Wasting my time and crappy firmware!
Summary: Bought the product about 2 months back mainly for its support of MKV files. While the MKV files work, if you try to fast forward or rewind during a movie..it just flashes an error - "Trick Mode Not supported". I have tried this with multiple files. When you also try and resume a MKV movie back it always just starts from the beginning..therefore you just cannot watch MKV files.
Firmware is worse than previous gen WDTV; Support team does not help on their own forums
16 December 2009
Summary: I was so excited to get this thing. When it works, it is amazing. But, it doesn't work. The latest firmware (.12) started "bricking" devices. Thankfully, I stayed on .11. This is one update after the debut firmware of .10. The .11 firmware is not mature enough for a product being sold on Amazon or other stores. If you buy this, you will be a beta tester for a product for which the company already has your money and does not owe you a thing in regards to better firmware.
Summary: Out of the box, it worked for exactly one day before (presumably) the automatic firmware update rendered it useless. The UI was a bit clunky, but it was playing 1080 HD files off of Windows 7 network shares and all kinds of cool stuff. But now it's worthless junk. It will no longer connect to my shares, regardless of the credentials entered.
plays every type of file i stream to it (mkv, iso, avi, mpg, etc.), but has its flaws.

Summary: first off, mkv wont play streamed through most media server setups. best bet is to use network shares if you are gonna stream mkv files. it will detect subs within the containers and it will detect subs if theyre in the same directory as the movie file, assuming they share the same name. ive played isos, mkvs, mpgs, mp4s, avis... all through network shares with no real problems relating to file types.
NOT A UK PLUG & CHEAPER FROM OTHER SELLERS ON AMAZON

Summary: I already have a WD TV Live box for my living room and have been so pleased with it for the past 12-18 months of constant use that I recently decided to buy another for another room. I didn't read reviews properly or shop around, as owning one already I THOUGHT I knew what to expect. Silly me...life lesson learned!
Summary: The selection process is laborious as there is a delay every time you hit a remote button ... You cannot browse the web as it suggests ... You cannot download the apps you want - and need ... Overall a huge disappointment ...
Summary: One star for Plug and setup After that .......Waiting .......Waiting..... Waiting...For it to boot, for it to load a Service.... for it to respond to a remote command...waiting for it to index any storage device... Dont buy this product in the state its in, you'll be dissapointed, if your used to a Laptop or something with a decent processor, I'm on BT Infinity and get around 20Mb download and a laptop connection to Netflix account for instance was instant.
