The WD TV is easy to use and doesn't ask you to sacrifice a lot of space With so much digital media available at our fingertips, the computer has become a trusty companion when it comes to content management. It may be busting at the seams, but it’s a nice alternative for those that don’t have thousands of dollars to plunk down on a dedicated media server. Now the only problem is how to enjoy that entertainment. Read more

    • Insanely easy setup; works for Mac and PC users; provides great audio playback; photos and video are incredibly sharp.
    • Doesn't have love for DRM content; no HDMI cable included.

I love this little black box. It singlehandedly solved my video playback problems and ended months of frustration. People will gripe about the lack of network support, but I personally have no desire to stream high definition video over my local network. Direct hard drive or thumb drive connections ensure fast and reliable playback and controls. Simple and fast, the WD HD TV Media Player is a powerhouse solution in a tiny and affordable package. Today we take a look at the Western Digital WD TV HD Media player. The WD TV HD Media Player is a device about the size of an external hard drive that plays A/V content from USB storage media. The WD TV HD Media player is optimized for the WD "My Passport" line of hard drives but it will work with other USB devices (we'll discuss this later). Read more

While it isn't infallible, the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player plays back a wide array of audio, video, and image files on your TV without the need for a computer. Read more

    • Compact adapter allows for playback of USB-based multimedia files on TV; reads a lot of file formats; both HDMI and composite video connections; able to connect up to ...
    • Couldn't play back audio on some files; no networking capabilities; eSATA, FireWire, or flash media reader options would've been nice as well.

From my point of view, the advantage that it has built-in hard disk that i can connect the hard drive which I want (make, capacity …), today I connect a hard drive 1 Giga in morning because they are cheap and logged a 1.5 or 2 because prices have continued to fall, or I have been filled the previous… Read more

This is the first media player I bought. It had issues right out of the box. It would play videos but there was no sound. Turns out it didn't like the audio codec. Converted the audio codec and then it worked ok (more work than it needed to be). The playback is good but video navigation is clunky at best. Fast forward works ok but it is not real time and it's hard to find the exact spot you want to stop at. Forget about rewinding. It's choppy and unresponsive. Read more

This product will work well for someone in a small apartment where their entertainment center and their computer area are one and the same. It's really not made for wireless communication from the data source. It works well with older TV models (analog and early digital TVs) as far as outputting its data stream. It didn't work well with wireless connections to data sources (aka my MacBook Pro). Read more

I have this unit attached to my Denon 3808, and love the it. I was initially looking at the Tvix unit, but was kinda taken aback at the price. Enter the WD TV. I did a little research on the unit before purchasing, and found it did most of what I was looking for. Setup was easy, the image and sound via HDMI is great. The operation menu's can be a little slow at times, and there may be a file format issue here and there, but it is till in its infancy as far as firmware. Read more

Great product, and great buy, Newegg sell's it at manufacturer recommended price, same as the price I paid for it at Bestbuy. Has USB input port, and for output, RYW (Red, Yellow, White), HDMI, and Optical. Product works flawlessly at browsing seek speed (All depends on the cache size and RPM of external). Does not have to be a Western Digital hard drive, too darken the day on the belief by their ads, you do. FAT and NTSF will work. Read more

    • Awesome, reads fast, can use any external hard drive that is NTFS, or FAT.
    • Does not read iPod file system, but maybe Zune's? .
