Summary: another reviewer said it best, so i'm just going to copy their comments here. I experienced the same exact, word for word: Worked great for 18 months. Then it died. It currently loads up like it will work....then it crashes and you can't watch anything. - Lame.
Summary: used this drive as an extender for our Tivo HD. After 18 months of service, the Drive started clicking and then Tivo rebooted and hung. Had to unpair the Drive with the Tivo which forces you to loose all of the recorded content ~60 hrs of shows. Drive is toast.
Summary: I have 2 My DVR EXPANDER's, each on a TIVO HD. Both came with very loosely connecting e-sata cables. And now one has failed after less then a year, and I've lost piles of programming. The symptoms?
Summary: I purchased an HD Tivo and DVR expander about 2 months ago. After about a month the Tivo started freezing and failing to record. This problem became more and more frequent, and after a few weeks the Tivo was unusable. I called Tivo tech support and they suggested I disconnect the expander.
Summary: Use of a combined TiVo and My DVR Expander is relatively inexpensive, but it's somewhat of a makeshift solution. It's more complex and subject to pitfalls than simply plugging in an external hard drive.
Summary: I went through two of these is about as many years because they keep dying. This seems to be a known issue with them based on searches through google. However TiVo still hasn't come out with another option for us.
Summary: Another reviewer, Early Adopter,on Nov 2008 used just about the same headline as I have above to claim his frustration with a until that died within 18 months. I agree totally. for a couple of weeks my Tivo unit has been freezing and restarting multiple times when playing back programs.
Summary: Like the other 40+ reviewers, this was a breeze to install with my TiVo Series III HD. That was 18 months ago, and it's worked perfectly until today. I ran the Kickstart 54 SMART diagnostics, and the external drive has failed.
Summary: Bought my 500GB expander in October 2007. Worked great with Cox Cable's Scientific Atlanta 8300HD box for about a year. Then I started noticing tiling in some channels (on live TV, not recorded DVR programs). It got progressively worse. Three techs came out and gave me two new SA cable boxes.
