"Buyer Beware!! Slingbox software updates are a scam!"
15 May 2013
Pros: Does allow placeshifting as long as the unit is in warranty.
Cons: Once your slingbox unit is out of warranty you'll receive a software update that causes your product to stop working. Either pay the $29.95 tech support fee (potentially EACH time a software update comes out) or enjoy your new paperweight.
Summary: If you are considering buying a Slingbox PLEASE do your research before you buy!! Sling Media (the company that manufactures/sells Slingbox hardware) has a habit of sending out what they call "firmware updates", basically new software, 1-6 months after the warranty expires. After these updates a large number of Slingbox owners have found their units cease to work. Upon calling for support Slingbox owners/users are told they must pay $29.95 for technical support.
Pros: watch TV from any internet connected device. How many more pros do you need? There have been 4 critical news issues I was able to watch in real time because of being able to connect to my TV at home from work.
Cons: One of mine,I have 2,is an older one and every time I start up the viewer it threatens not to work. So far it has worked every time but it is annoying that it might go away. But I understand they can't keep up with one I bought back around 2000 :))
Summary: Let me be clear, this review is no reflection upon the Amazon seller, and only relates to the Slingmedia product itself which I previously purchased elsewhere ! Don't buy Sling products! After you have purchased the hardware, Slingmedia still want more money from you. You have to additional purchase the iPad application, and then you have to separately purchase the iPhone application.
Summary: Had the pro for 4 months, out of warranty! They want more money to fix a known problem. Will not connect and when it does I might get 20 minutes of view time and then they want me to plug and unplug and plug the power cord in again and again...Hard to do when you are 20 miles away! $300 for the Pro box, 150 for the sling catcher, 30 for the android app, 15 for the Ipad app! So I'm out about $500 and I will destroy this company every chance I can!
Summary: I realy like my sling box. I'm im mexico and can watch everything I watched in the states. its a little slow changing chanels, but the picture is great as well as the sound. I'm not one of these teckno geeks,so I cant give you a whole lot of tec advice. so I'll just say I think its the best thing to come along since toilet paper.
Summary: First of all, let me say what's wrong with this item. Streaming online is imperfect and changing channels doesn't always work. It's the same problem with the ipad app. Sometimes if the internet connection isn't great, the streaming is horribly pixelated. But aside from that, this is one of the most amazing devices I've ever used. Being able to watch cable from anywhere in the world that has an internet connection cannot be described. I love it so much.
Summary: I have had this thing less then 3 months and it has died already. My cousin purchased one last December and it died in April. I called Customer support and they wanted a credit card to hold to send me a new one. What...!)@&)@(*#&*%R#_) Then I asked some questions that she clearly could not answer and if she did not know the answers, she should have just stated that instead of rambling and making statements about things I did not ask about.
Summary: Very disappointing product. Plugged it in and the online setup found the device on my home network. But I could never get past that point to configure the device. Repeatedly received a message that there was an error acessing the device. Online support was not helpful and there is essentially no live support. $300 down the drain.
