Summary: It's great having the convenience of streaming movies and TV shows but Roku lacks two major components. A Keyboard and an Internet Browser. Searching for a show with the rudimentary remote that comes with it is painful. Also, if Roku had an app for a browser, you could watch shows from abc.com, etc. Want to watch last weeks episode of Survivor? Sorry - no can do.
Summary: Short Version: If it can't find your network, try the old school cables instead of the HDMI for the setup. I'm not a novice when it comes to setting up computers/electronics and I found this set-up completely ridiculous. I kept getting a message that it could not find my network. Every other device in my house can without a problem. Linksys Wireless WRT54G.
Must have strong wifi signal & don't expect to watch Netflix on Friday Night
28 November 2010
Summary: According to Roku tech support the Roku XD should be no farther than 50 feet from the wifi source, the HD model no farther than 20 feet. Just because your smart phone or wireless laptop work just fine at the location where you place your Roku don't assume, as I did, that the Roku will have sufficient signal. It took me 3 hours to accomplish setup since my XD model would find my wifi signal but then could not connect.
Summary: Its a great product in lots of ways and its clear to me that the days of cable tv are numbered. Just for Netflix alone its worth the money. But there's some concerns - here and now - and on the horizon. Here and now - wireless connection seems problematic as one can tell from other reviews on this site. I had to go into the router and reduce the firewall settings to get this to work. Not really what I'd like to do, and not something many consumers would know how to do.
