Summary: The unit itself functions as advertized, however the remote has a conflict with the TV. I have not been able to resolve the conflict with the TV when I use the remote. I have to cover the sensor on the TV in order to keep the TV from going bonkers when I use the netgear remote. These devices need to offer different frequencies to use in order to resolve these type of conflicts. For this reason and only this reason I gave it 3 of 5. It really is a pita.
Summary: I bought this for $18 somewhere else. YES $100 less and it was refurbished. I'm not plugging the other site so that's not what this is about but it does effect my review. For $18 this is a great player. Bur for $118 shop for something else. Pros: small, fast(ish) boot time, easy menus, plays well. Cons: Menu scrolling does not loop or jump.
Summary: I was excited to see the price drop on this unit, thinking it worth the try. I already own an Iomega Screenplay HD (500GB) that must be at least two years old now. I got it for around $160 and bear in mind it is a 500GB USB HDD with built-in multimedia features. I've seen some similar enclosure knockoffs so Iomega probably just brands one for themselves.
Summary: While this device offers an HDMI port it is completely wasted because the output is standard TV. The one benefit of this system over the WD TV (standard model) is it has network support. HOWEVER, there is a new custom firmware for the WD TV system called WDLXTV which allows network support plus a whole bunch more. It takes 3 minutes to mod, you don't need to open anything, and a novice can do it.
Summary: First the pluses. It is simple to setup and very easy to use. It also has a nice assortment of sources for streaming. On the down side its output looks very soft on a HD TV. I have a PS3 and use PlayOn to stream a variety of sources like Hulu and Netflix. The output from this device is far worse than the PS3s using the same source (Playon). I even called netgear support to confirm that I had the latest firmware and that the device was setup optimally.
