DSM-520 Great Media player with the right know-how
31 July 2009
Pros: I have owned a DSM-520 for 2 years now. It's an excellent device but most of the reviews here come from a misunderstanding of what is slow and how to use it. First, be sure to update the firmware on the device to the latest level which can be done online or through the USB port. Second, the inclu...
Summary: I almost did not buy this because of all the reviews I have read. I am done trusting reviews. I downloaded the newest software and firmware as soon as I unboxed the player. I installed the needed software and added it to my wireless network and it works great.
Pros: No more cable bill! Good image quality, reliable software and compatible with many formats.
Cons: It is a little sluggish as times, but it I have it setup over wireless. Overall it is great. When browsing my mp3 collection it was a little slow, but I do have a 95 GB Mp3 collection.
Summary: I love this device and have bought another one after finding out that the DSM-320 was garbage. I run it wireless using my dlink 802.11g wireless router and have had very few problems. It would probably run beeter if I could increase the the wireless speed off the computer where I am streaming from.
Pros: Stream music, videos, and pictures from any PC to your TV. 802.11g wireless with the ability to use WEP or WPA, WPA2. Supports alot of different video codecs. Recent firmware upgraded added the new Active TV online feature. There are a few bugs but I think it was an great new feature that I didn'...
Cons: The media server software does need some improvements. I don't use it as all my computers use the Windows Media Connect software. Doesn't support all video formats but it supports the most common ones.
Summary: I like the media server interface that comes with it. There have been negative reviews but I think it is super simple and works great. It automatically groups all videos/photos/music together no matter what share folder they are in on your computer.
Pros: Easy set-up. Helps to know your security settings on your wireless router. It uses WEP by default so if you don't know your key you may have problems or if you use WAP you may have to switch to WEP. I don't recall it having a WAP option.
Cons: Like someone else mentioned, it has no memory of where you stop watching a video so if you lose connection you have to start over and the FF is really slow so it takes a while to find where you left off. Would be nice to have a memory function for that and have incremental next skips so you could...
Summary: I originally spent about a solid hour setting this unit up to work with my wireless network. Sunday night, lighting struck my apartment building and fried this DSM-520 and my cable modem. Everything else managed to survive though.
Pros: I looooove this thing. I was using Windows Media Connect Software but didn't realize that Nero 7 Ultra has a media server built right in. It is much faster in conjunciton with the DSM-520 than Windows Media Connect is.
Cons: Configuration is a little tricky but once it's on the network, it works pretty good.
Summary: The DLink Media Share Server software sucks. It would not recognize a single DIVX movie I have and I have about 90 sitting on a an external hard drive. I used Windows Media Connect instead which is built into Media player 11 on XP.
Pros: A great product that does what it says once you finally get it configured. I didn't buy this from NEW EGG. I got it locally but paid a little less for it.
Cons: I had to jump through hoops to get this on my wireless N network. I have an ASUS WL-500W router and I'm averaging 270 MBit's per second transfer rate on my network. I tried following the DLink on screen Wizard to set up the wireless settings and it was not working. I had to tell the unit it was i...
Summary: Buy it. If you really want a Media Player this is the one. It has performed better than I could have hopped after reading the other reviews.
Pros: I wanted a media player that I could throw on my TV and watch videos that are on my pc. Works fabulous. It literally took me 30 seconds to hook up and I had zero problems. So far I haven't have any issues with playing the videos I have that have different formats. I run it wired on my network to ...
