Save yourself the trouble - don't buy one!
14 September 2013
Summary: I rarely use exclamation points, but D-Link deserves one here. I'm struggling to find terms nasty enough to express my experience with the unit and the company and yet be polite to my readers. First, I've gone through three units, because of various faults. Second, in trying to troubleshoot said faults, one is quite literally subjected to hours on hold before a service rep picks up. Don't even bother with email support, they simply don't answer.
Summary: Gonna keep this review short and sweet. I am a videophile since 1981, when I bought my first Betamax. (And it still works, btw :) I own and have owned all kinds of gear, some great, some not. But this thing is worthless. It freezes up, shuts down, is finnicky rebooting. And more. I wanted it to work so badly that I ordered a second one a few months after having returned the first. The second functioned exactly as the first had.
Summary: user friendly remote and design mean nothing when you're working with a worthless product...so much frustration from such a tiny box. Not sure I've had a single positive experience with my Boxee. COMPLETE CRAP!
Pros: remote...great for searching, design
Cons: constant buffering, freezing, spontaneous rebooting, loading time, shut down delay, spontaneous exit from videos
Summary: I had a Roku - this was supposedly an upgrade. But happens to be a severe downgrade, relatively less apps. I had to buy this for a particular channel (Asian) that was only available on this - even that did not work. The switch between apps required a switch-off and on of the box! Call customer service - was on hold for over an hour due to high call volumes! I can understand why that is! The box is very buggy, sluggish and very poor customer service.
Summary: Originally ordered this unit because of all the features it possessed including web browsing. The first unit worked flawlessly until I tried to connect to NetFlix. Then the unit started to freeze. Contacted customer support for both Boxee and NetFlix, and finally determined the box was defective The unit was replaced within 3 working days. Excited that the unit would work, connected it following the instructions to the letter, and it failed to load.
Summary: First off, this was the third D-Link Boxee Box I've purchased. The other two (bought 'new') have been flawless; one in our home theater and one for my parents as a Christmas gift. No issues at all with those. I decided to pick up another D-Link Boxee Box HD for a less frequently used TV (to make is less of an annoyance dealing with a ton of different workout video DVD's my wife likes), so I thought I'd try to save a few bucks and pick up a refurb.
Summary: The boxee appeared to be very unstable. It locked up about 10 times in 2 days before I returned it for a Roku 3. I now have a Roku, Roku 3 and a WDLive Plus. The boxee appeared to have great potential, but didn't live up to it. I could not get it to work consistently with Playon whihc fo rme was a show stopper. It would look like it was going to work, but it would take 10 minutes to start playing a show after I selected it. Other timres it wouldn't ever start playing.
Summary: Ordered two of these devices and neither worked. The devices would power up but would not interface with the remotes. Attempted to sync the remotes for approximately 35minutes to no avail. I then concluded that it may be the battery after exchanging a working battery from my vehicles car stereo remote and attempted the process over nothing at all. What a disappointment!
Summary: This supposed media player has been abandoned/discontinued for over two years now. The reviews that say "Firmware Update!" in early 2011 convinced me to purchase it, and it's the most regretful purchase I have ever made in my entire life. Please, do not believe that it will get better, because it won't. This thing takes a long time to boot up. Requires to you to sign up for an account so Boxee can spam your inbox.
