D-Link Boxee Box DSM-380 review
20 November 2012
Excerpt: The Boxee is a network media player done right with one or two caveats. In contrast to the rough efforts of many if its competitors D-Link has built a great-looking device that provides an elegant experience for both local and internet media playback. Ports are kept to a minimum – the only video output is HDMI and you have stereo RCA ports and optical digital output for additional audio.
Pros: Plays everything smooth interface excellent library features excellent remote.
Cons: It can be very slow to load libraries and apps.
Summary: The Boxee Box does offer a lot of goodness - a whole bunch of apps, interesting design and is a very capable media-streaming device. However, you get the WD Live Hub with a 1TB hard drive built-in for considerably less money.
Pros: Very good HD playback, with the filters correctly set up, Boxee Media Manager app is easy to set up, Unique design, Remote has a complete keypad on one side
Cons: A couple of filters make video noisy, if turned on, UI feels dated, You get a WD Live Hub with a 1TB drive for slightly less cash!, Quite a few apps don't work in India
Conclusion: So far I am happy. I cannot quite say the Boxee Box is perfect, but with a little bit of learning and tweaking it is serving its purpose. I would certainly change the design to be more flat so that it could hide behind or under a TV better. Also the menus need to be more customizable. I would like to be able to sort the DVDs and put them into seperate lists for kids and adults without having to move the actual files (like a play list).
Summary: The Boxee Box by D-Link has some innovative design choices and a promising user interface, but mainstream content is mostly missing in action until future firmware updates are available.
Cons: Basic apps like Netflix, Vudu, and Hulu Plus are promised soon, but not available yet; content holders like Hulu are blocking Boxee's browser; double-sided remote has an assortment of usability issues; Boxee's online TV show data is frequently outdated and incomplete; virtually no popular movies available; unorthodox design may not fit in small home theater cabinets; can't be controlled by standard IR universal remote; can't connect to older, non-HDMI TVs.
Summary: Verdict: The Boxee is an excellent media centre that anyone can use on a day-to-day basis. While it is somewhat expensive and lacks Component output connectivity, these flaws aren’t actually deal breakers. Highly recommended.
Pros: Winning looks, slick user interface, superb remote control, can be controlled by your Apple iPhone or Google Android-powered smartphone.
Excerpt: For years, hardcore media-streamer PC hacker tinkerer types have scoffed at Apple TV’s limited feature set and built themselves Linux-based miniPCs that get a massive range of media formats to your TV at full 1080p. Now, DLink has backed a one-time maverick project to bring this kind of functionality to the ordinary home user. But does Boxee Box still really suit the uber-geek more than the mum and dad?
Pros: Good build quality, Great remote, Lots of features
Cons: Glitchy and fiddly, Most compelling services not available in Australia
Cons: Brak osobnych przycisków do regulacji głośności w pilocie
