Black & White

Black & White is developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Feral Interactive. It is a God game released in 2001, which included elements of artificial life, strategy, and Versus fighting games. Its sequel is Black & White 2. The player takes on the role of a god ruling over an island populated by various tribes. The player's control over the island is manifested in the Hand, an animated on-screen hand which can move or throw people and objects, tap houses. The goal of a level is to gain control over every village on the island, through the performance of impressive acts that will cause the villagers to believe in the player. Villagers can be swayed by everything from helping them with day-to-day tasks to terrorising them with fireballs and lightning storms. The game has an ESRB rating of T (Teen)/ELSPA 11+/PEGI 12+ and requires Mac OS 8.6 with G3 333 MHz, 96 MB RAM, 8 MB video RAM, 8x CD-ROM, and 600 MB disk space.

Features

Black & White features the player's Creature — a pet of sorts that can be trained to do almost anything, (a game AI developed by Richard Evans). With time and repetition, it can perform complex functions that will allow it to serve as the player's avatar in the world. It also features the Temple, the building at which tribesfolk worship and the Creature sleeps. To increase the verisimilitude, menus and statistics are replaced by specialized rooms in the temple. Each village under the player's control will construct a worship area in the temple, where magical or 'prayer' energy is accumulated that can be used for miracles. Other features on this game are destructive miracles directed against players can be anticipated; ‘Gesture Recognition’ technology which allows miracles to be created, practiced and perfected by mouse movement, i.e., to create a wall of fire, for example, sweep the mouse in a circle . From this gesture, Lionhead’s GR technology will determine how accurately the miracle was gestured and therefore its power; worshippers are all-important in that they provide the ‘prayer power’ needed for miracles. If necessary followers can be ordered to pray more. The more frenzied the dancing and chanting, the more power they will provide. But if pushed too hard, they may die of exhaustion.
