REVIEW: Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II Lens Review
3 weeks ago
Excerpt: This manual focus standard lens is available to fit Nikon and Canon SLR cameras. Both versions of this lens are manual focus, but sport electronic contacts to fully support all metering modes and aperture control from each brand of camera. The lens costs around £400, which a fair chunk cheaper than Nikon's own AF-S 58mm f/1.4G lens , which costs a whopping £1450!
Excerpt: Cosina, which currently owns the Voigtlander brand name, announced release of the new SL II series of SLR lenses in the Fall of 2007. Needless to say that this announcement caught many by surprise, positive surprise obviously, since everybody believed that Cosina discontinued the SL lenses for good back in 2004.
Excerpt: Originally posted 2010-08-30 on Optyczne.pl Lenses with f/1.4 apertures and the focal length in the 50-58 mm range are among the most popular and also the most classic fixed focal devices on the market. Small wonder every serious optics manufacturer tries to include these in its line-up and every editorial office which tests optics and publishes reviews, has a lot of these instruments’ tests. The Optyczne.pl is not an exception to the rule.
Cons: unsatisfactory image quality at the edge of the frame near the maximum relative aperture,, high coma,, huge vignetting on full frame.
Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II - Full Format Review / Test Report

Conclusion: The Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II is an interesting offer in the standard lens arena. Its focal length is slightly longer than a typical standard lens which is certainly a plus for portraits and such. Like most of its cousins it suffers from somewhat lowered contrast, high vignetting and corner softness at f/1.4. The bokeh, especially the background blur, could also be a little better at this setting.

Conclusion: The Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II is an interesting new offer in the standard lens arena. The slightly longer than average focal length is especially attractive for APS-C DSLR users - a field-of-view "equivalent" to "85mm" is pretty much in the sweet spot of portrait photography. Technically the lens is somewhat soft at f/1.4 both in terms of border resolution as well as overall contrast.
