Becoming Less a Fan of Third Party Gear

CodaPhotoDotCom, Adorama
1 July 2014
  • Excerpt: Being an event and concert photographer, I was looking for a fast ultra wide zoom to add to my bag. The build quality and finish of this lens are what gave it the two stars. As for performance, this lenses was horrible at any aperture larger than f/5.6.I shot it on three different bodies (D700, D4 and D300s) and got the same fuzzy results on all three. Focus fine tuning wasn't necessary because it was decent at 5.6 and really sharp at f/11.
  • Pros: Durable, Rugged, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Poor in Low Light

Meh

  • Summary: Bought one in store which ended up having defective auto-focus. Returned it and got the Nikon 14-24 instead, which is worth every single penny.

Poor quality control issues exhibiting corner softness

MV, Amazon
22 November 2013
  • Summary: Recently purchased this lens knowing that people had experienced quality control issues. Sure enough, I was one of the unlucky ones who received a bad copy. I ran some tests with my D600 and noted that the upper right corner (maybe 15% of the frame) was extremely soft. Everything else was sharp. Not even AF tuning was able to help. Anyways, back it went and I will not try to get a 2nd copy. Not worth the hassle with buying and returning online.

Auto focus stopped working.

Hung Truong, Amazon
10 July 2013
  • Summary: I am giving 5 stars rating for the lens. Build quality, images, price, are outstanding!!! Dependability 2 stars, maybe less. Auto focus stopped working after 300+ pictures, only had it for two weeks. Own 10+ Nikkor lenses, NEVER have problems. Seller won't do exchange because warranty already filled out. $35.00 for postage to send it back to Tokina in California for repair. Probably wait at least 4 weeks to get it back. BUMP!!! big time.

Sharper than Canon 16-35L ii; Would not honor warranty.

JesselSummers, Amazon
20 June 2013
  • Summary: I loved this lens and used it lightly for two months; I bought it new from Adorama with warranty. I kept it in a dedicated sleeve in my backpack, only taking it out when shooting. The AF mechanism quit working in the middle of a shoot after 2 months of ownership. I mailed the lens into Tokina with receipt. When I followed up a week later, the gentleman in repairs quoted me a $203 Out-of-Warranty repair due to internal sand damage.

Backfocus issues on my copy

Chandrashekhar, Amazon
28 May 2012
  • Summary: I really wanted to like this lens however the lens I recd had severe back focus& hence am sending it back. Even setting of -20 cannot get me sharp in focus pictures. Based on my tests the lens back focuses at all focal lengths at f/2.8. It starts improving from f/4.0 where the back focus is from 24 mm to 28 mm. At f/5/6 everything in frame is sharp, but then defeats the purpose of fast lens.

Not very good

bmf_tway, Amazon
2 May 2011
  • Summary: I was so looking forward to this lens after seeing some really good reviews on it. The problem was at f/2.8. Everything looked so hazy and had a strange blur around the edges heading toward the center. Even the center wasn't all that sharp as stated by other reviewers. At f/4.0 and up it begins to get sharper but still not as sharp as I'd like.

Vergleich mit Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

ML, Amazon
1 February 2014
