I really really wanted this lens to work for me...

Mya, Amazon

  • Summary: I really really wanted this lens to work for me because its affordable but unfortunately it didn't. Don't get me wrong, I love the constant 2.8 but it can only focus in bright sunlight. Indoors, in relatively 'normal' lighting, it just can't focus. It keeps hunting and cannot lock focus so you have to manually focus. I used it mostly for video and if you're always manually focusing, its a keeper.

Couldn't justify it

  • Excerpt: I got this lens and found that it tends to be very soft at either end. I was consistently getting slightly out of focus photos. Occassionally I'd get some fabulous ones, but it just wasn't worth the [$] price tag. I think had it been closer to $300 I could justify it. This lens is absolutely better than kit lens, but when compared to my 50mm 1.4 and 85 1.4, it just doesn't stand a chance. I ended up returning it. [...
  • Pros: Durable, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Blurry Focus

No sharp pictures at 75mm, 2.8 f.

  • Excerpt: I got the lens yesterday 6/30/2010. I took about 100 pictures under low light condition for testing. I could not get any sharp image at 75mm, 2.8 f. Totally disappointed. I understand that I might get a bad copy of this lens. Tamron quality control needs to make sure there is no bad copy of their products, specialy for SP lenses.
  • Cons: Blurry Focus, Poor in Low Light

It's okay at best

  • Excerpt: I purchased this lens a few months ago because I have read many reviews saying how sharp it is and how good the quality is...I am not impressed. I have used this lens from Landscapes to Weddings. Landscapes it does alright at f8-ish. Indoor and lower-light was having a tough time with sharpness. Unacceptable in my opinion for weddings. Just not sharp enough, and had quite a bit of AF hunting. The color on this lens could be better as well.
  • Pros: Lightweight
  • Cons: AF hunting, Blurry Focus, Slow Focus

Major AF problems with D300

MJG, B&H Photo
1 December 2008
  • Excerpt: The lens is sharp, and the f2.8 very useful. This lens would have gotten 5 stars, but unfortunately, the autofocus was a major problem right out of the box. The AF is intermittent. The autofocus will work normally, then, without warnining, it will simply stop autofocusing. Sometimes, when I turn the camera off then on, it will work again for a while. Sometimes it stops focusing for no apparent reason.
  • Pros: Sharp lens
  • Cons: Disfunctional autofocus
