Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di VC USD 1:1 Macro: A Short, Full-Frame Tele-Macro With Image Stabilization

Shutterbug

  • Summary: I was thoroughly familiar with Tamron’s VC from zoom lenses I’d tested previously. The question comes down to: how important is image stabilization in a macro lens? Until now I would have said I could do without it. But my tests bore out the benefits of VC in preventing camera shake, down to three stops below the recommended shutter speed for a handheld camera with a life-size image. My one critique is in regard to flatness of field at wider apertures.

  • Conclusion: The Tamron SP 90mm f2.8 Di VC USD Macro , ( compare prices ) ( review ) is a sharp lens that’s a good performer both as a macro lens and as a general purpose/portrait lens. Distortion is pretty much non-existent and chromatic aberration is well controlled. Sharpness is very good, even wide open, though stopping down a little results in some improvement.

  • Conclusion: The Tamron 90mm is a great lens that offers lots of scope for creative work. We enjoyed the flexibility of its constant minimum and maximum apertures and the large manual focusing ring performed really smoothly. It also packed in plenty of advanced features, with its UltraSonic Drive allowing near-silent AF and Vibration Compensation function bagging sharper shots, while the build felt nicely balanced with our test camera.

SP 90 mm f/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD

  • Excerpt: Although the line-up of Tamron lenses is pretty modest, the users are usually very happy with them. The Tamron SP AF 60 mm f/2.0 Di II LD (IF) Macro 1:1 is a great example – it is not only optically brilliant but pretty fast for a macro lens too. Also the elderly Tamron SP AF 90 mm f/2.8 Di Macro has had many good opinions, being even a resolution record holder on the Canon EOS 20D sensor for some time on our forum.
  • Cons: modest accessory kit,, vignetting on full frame could have been lower.
