  • Excerpt: I've used this lens for six months so have a good idea of it's performance. After hearing all the hype I was hoping for better sharpness than my 24-105, but found it not as good as the Canon at any aperture or focal length. The problem seems to be the AF, which is unreliable.

Not as sharp as my other lenses

David Brown "Dave", Amazon
1 September 2014
  • Summary: I bought two copies of this lens, and had the same issue with both. Returned the first, but ended up keeping the second. The main appeal to me was the f 2.8 aperture, although I figured out right away that there was a significant fall-off in sharpness below 3.5.

Canon 24 70 vs Canon 24 105 Test

Mark McLaughlin, Maryland USA, Amazon
6 August 2014
  • Summary: I tested the Tamron 24 70 against the Canon 24 105...each set to 70mm focal length, f5.0, 1/100 ISO 100 with AF on. Hand held, with the stabilizers on, the Canon wins in terms of sharpness.

  • Excerpt: I bought this expecting to use it as an improvement on a Canon 24-105L f4 that I use as an everyday walk about lens. My interpretation of review data at Dxomark led me to believe that the optics of this Tamron would at least match, and likely exceed, the Canon 24-105.

  • Excerpt: I purchased this lens and a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and ran a side by side comparison. The two lenses both performed extremely well however one is about 1/3 the cost of the other. The biggest selling point on this lens is its vibration reduction which, on the Sony mount version, is absent.

  • Pros: Sharp, Weather sealed

great portrait lens

M. Binbek, Amazon
24 July 2013
  • Summary: Maybe I have a defective model it is the sharpest thing I have shot on a tripod with VC off and in AF-S only. If I shoot with AS-A or AS-C It will never fail to produce a sharp image it also overexposes.

  • Excerpt: I tried the lens for a week or so. I must say this lens is not bad at all. It's really not as sharp as others have specified. I returned it and got the daddy of lenses , the prime Nikon 24-70mm. Right away I saw the differences.

Not sharp enough to me

James T. Yeh "appreciative", Amazon
13 January 2013
  • Summary: I am disappointed that the lens does not deliver images with the level of sharpness I expect. The images are soft at all F numbers, not just the wide aperture end. I was certainly spoiled by the sharpness delivered by EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 L and by EF-S 10-22 mm.

A lot of hype but marginal results

Newrider, buydig.com
16 November 2012
  • Excerpt: I bought this for shooting indoor equestrian events with my Canon 60D. Lighting is usually nominal at best. In low light the lens tends to hunt more than my Canon 85mm 1.8 and the AF isn't fast enough to keep up with moving subjects. At full aperature the results were not sharp.
  • Pros: Solid feel, Nice build
  • Cons: Heavy, Not Sharp At Full Open, Slow AF
