REVIEW: Tamron AF 55-200mm f/4-5.6 Di II LD Macro Review

  • Excerpt: Handling and features This compact telephoto lens is immensely popular amongst those looking for a compact, lightweight addition to their standard kit lens. It provides an angle of view equivalent to an 82.5-300mm lens used on a 35mm camera, costs peanuts to buy new and is available to fit Canon, Nikon and Sony DSLRs. Can such a low-cost lens deliver decent quality? We'll investigate in this review.

Tamron 55-200mm f/4-5.6 LD Macro Review

What Digital Camera
26 March 2009
  • Summary: The Tamron excels at wide apertures and short-to-medium focal lengths but is numerically weaker at the 200mm setting. Overall this is a very competent and good-looking lens that should appeal to everyone other than photographers for whom a practical manual-focusing option is essential.
  • Pros: Excellent image quality at shorter focal lengths
  • Cons: Minute manual focusing ring

REVIEW: Tamron 55-200mm f/4-5.6 LD Macro Di ll

  • Conclusion: Not the lightest in class and not the best build quality in class (but not the worst either), this offering from Tamron is certainly one of the cheapest in class and optically the best performer by a long way. The trend with this type of lens to rely overly on autofocus, with only token nods towards manual focusing concerns me a little, but the MF ring on this model is at least usable. It has to be one of the best budget buys on the market.
  • Pros: Amazing optical quality for a budget lens, Price makes excellent value for money, Hood included
  • Cons: Plastic mount (can wear if much lens changing is practiced), AF is a little slow and noisy.

  • Conclusion: Listing the advantages and disadvantages of the Tamron 55-200 mm was a difficult task – practically in all categories it had close to average results. You would be hard-pressed to choose one serious slip-up but, on the other hand, in no category we saw a truly exceptional performance. It is simply a solid but not outstandingly good lens; with the price tag of about 170 $ it is a very good recommendation for the purchase, however.
  • Cons: noticeable chromatic aberration, especially at 200 mm,, visible coma,, susceptibility to inner flares at all focal lengths,, slow and noisy autofocus,

  • Summary: Drugim wyróżnionym aparatem jest Olympus Smart VR-360.
