Summary: I got this as a kit lens with a c3 nex, but it is too large and heavy for the nex despite the nice metal exterior, and pictures are not very sharp at small and large focal lengths and barely acceptable at mid range. The new 1650 is better and much smaller, but requires compensation for barrel distortion and vignetting at short focal lengths.
Excerpt: This is a typical kit lens: light, easy to use, mediocre image quality. My unit was a bit "rough" when zooming in and out, almost like it wasn't lubricated properly. I've returned it to B&H & am waiting for a replacement. Sony really needs to get out good lenses for the NEX series.
Summary: I took this lens on various trips and really regret it now as some of my pictures are really incredibly low quality as a result of the lens. Specifically, its softening of the image around the edges when the lens is at the shorter focal lengths. After some tests it seems to be that its shooting at low f-stops that causes this.
