REVIEW: Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens Review

  • Excerpt: This 3x zoom lens is the one normally bundled as part of a kit with Sony NEX cameras. As a result, it's normally pretty cheap to pick up separately, costing only £140. For that you get a compact lens with optical stabilisation. In this review, we'll take a look at how it performs.

DP Review

  • Summary: The NEX-5 is a dramatic and original approach to camera design, offering some of the best image quality its class in a tiny, sleek body. It's not perfect as a camera to just point-and-shoot but in the hands of someone willing to take a little control is capable of superb results.
  • Pros: Small, innovative designs that are still comfortable to hold, High resolution sensor with excellent High ISO performance (in PASM modes), Good JPEG output quality, Great build quality (particularly NEX-5), Metal barrelled lenses feel impressive compared to peers, Tiltable high-resolution screen, Point-and-shoot interface that provides optional control of aperture, Interesting extra features such as in-camera HDR and sweep panorama, Good, clear live view magnification ...
  • Cons: High ISO capability (a major advantage of its large sensor) unavailable in iAuto mode, Constant overexposure of images wastes highlight capabilities (and no exposure compensation to correct it in iAuto mode), Consumes battery quickly if you use the screen a lot between shots, Poor shot-to-shot times (if you want to see a post-shot review image), 'Bkground Defocus' feature can encourage the use of the wrong settings, Screw-on flash awkward to attach, Screen can be diff...

E 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS

LensTip.com

  • Excerpt: Originally posted 2010-10-12 on Optyczne.pl The NEX Sony system was launched in May 2010 making it the youngest mirrorless system so far. Because of that, the offer of system lenses is currently very modest – it consists of two devices, which have been already launched and one, which is scheduled to hit the shelves soon.
  • Cons: weak or momentarily very weak resolution on the edge of the frame,, bad work against bright light,, very high chromatic aberration at shorter focal lengths,, significant distortion,, noticeable vignetting at the widest angle of view.

Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS (Sony NEX) - Review / Lens Test Report

photozone.de
12 September 2010
  • Conclusion: The Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is a decent "kit" zoom lens but it is, of course, not flawless. The image center is very sharp whereas the border/corner region is softer although still acceptable. A weakness is the high amount of lateral CAs at 18mm and 35mm which decreases the subjective quality perception quite a bit if you don't care about it during post-processing.

  • Summary: Projektanci optyki ciągle walczą z różnymi czynnikami wpływającymi na jakość obrazu i szukają różnego rodzaju kompromisów. Czasem rezygnują z korekcji jednej z wad, by nadrobić to lepszymi osiągami w kilku innych kategoriach.
