Excerpt: With any lens, the question is what is the expected use of the images made. In this case, it's snapshots. I bought this lens to replace the original Sony 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 glass zoom on my wife's NEX-5. It's half the length, and about a third the weight. The power zoom makes camera handling much easier than the manual zoom of the lens it replaced.Informal sharpness testing at max and min zoom with a lens-testing chart, viewed at 1: 1 shows this lens to be sharper than the...
Summary: I've never had a lens that had this bad barrel distortion and vignetting at the wide end. Absolutely awful. Even for a kit lens. That being said, at pretty much every other focus length this lens is good for a kit lens. I do like how compact it is. Good for video.
Summary: I like this lens the most because its more compact than the other ones I bought. Broke mine last month so instead of paying 4-500 on a new replacement I bought a refurb camera nex 3n with the lens for 286 dollars from Sony.
Summary: The lens was everything it should be, functioned as advertised. I was very disappointed in the packaging. The lens dimensions are approximately 2 inches in diameter and 1 inch tall. It was packed in a 6x4x4 box (a good one) loosley wrapped in a small piece of bubble wrap, no tape involved. When I opened the box the bubble wrap was on one end of the box leaving about two thirds of the boxes volume empty.
... stars because of its acceptable image quality in a pretty small size and light weight

Summary: I would give the lens itself 4 stars because of its acceptable image quality in a pretty small size and light weight. However I wasn't happy when I opened the box and saw there was all haze and dirt on the rear glass--even though I've seen from the previous comment that they shipped this lens without the rear cap. It took me half an hour cleaning it before I tried it on my camera body. Luckily there was not a big problem.
