Summary: Although I read any reviews before buying it, I was a little skeptical that the g series lens would make that much of a difference from the standard. I've just used it a few times now, but am thrilled with the image quality! Great color and sharpness with no distortion. As others have commented, it's a quick and silent focus, unlike the standard zoom lens which at times could be frustrating. So glad I made the investment - it's really worth it.
Summary: Some think this lens is overpriced. They're wrong, very wrong. You can buy a Sony 75-300 mm lens for under $300. This one sells for around $900. It is worth every penny. With optics by Leica it is extremely sharp and has fantastic color resolution, Some photography reviews mention that it's "plastic." personally I'll take todays hi tech synthetics over metal any day. Just as strong or close to it with a considerable weight gain.
Summary: This is great product and feels substantial in use. Super quiet motor (SSM) and fast to focus. I have a Sony A65 Camera and this telephoto lens will form one of my key lens for travel along with my supurb DT16-50 2.8 SSM lens. Worth the extra cost above the standard telephoto lens.
Summary: Although I have only been enjoying photography for over a year -- I've gotten some great shots with this lens. It's a little on the heavy side for me - but with the use of a tripod it is truly amazing!! Crystal clear shots for close-up of wildlife. You can see every detail!!
Summary: I love the image quality, excellent product from Sony. the 'G' coating proves the GOLD standard output. SSM is awesome... very fast... focus hold button is proper position to hold the focus... must have lens for outdoor and wildlife photographs... amazing..
Pros: Sharp, Image quality, well build quality, SSM & G optic
Summary: This is a wonderful lens. Light enough to handhold, but obviously when fully zoomed out much better on a tripod. The motor is super silent, and although it is not a macro lens, it takes near macro pictures at the long end. Although pricey, it is well worth it.
Great lens. Lightweight, sharp and the SSM is very fast focusing.

Summary: I take this lens with me where ever I go as it is so versatile. I also have the SAL70400 which is much heavier. This lens is one of the sharpest lenses I have and I would never part with it. Little on the slow side as far as the aperture goes, and the price you pay for this lens is quite good but wish it was cheaper. It's light and in sunlight a very fast focusing lens. For me it was a must have.
