Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM G (SAL-70300G) - Full Format Review / Test Report
2 December 2010
Conclusion: The Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM G impressed during our APS-C format test and it is capable of delivering high quality results within the full format scope as well. The resolution figures are generally excellent at 70mm and still very high towards the long end although the border and corner performance drops somewhat more here. Lateral CAs and distortions are generally well controlled and not really field-relevant. The lens produces some light falloff at max.
Summary: I can't help but have mixed feelings about this lens. It's built superbly, is fast focusing and has great control of falloff, distortion and flare. At shorter focal lengths it also performs very well, but to get good results at 300mm, the lens needs stopping down.
Pros: Excellent build quality, Fast focusing, Good control of distortion, CA and flare
Cons: Disappointing resolution at 300mm, High price tag for such a lens
Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM G (SAL-70300G) - APS-C Review / Test Report
31 October 2008
Conclusion: The Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM G is high quality lens and possibly the best of the breed (70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 class). The resolution figures are very good across the zoom range. Lateral CAs, vignetting and distortions are generally well controlled and not really field relevant. While not formally tested the quality of the bokeh is pleasing - an important aspect for a tele lens. The build quality of the lens is very good and better than the mainstream.
Summary: For less than 1,000 Euros, you have just a really good lens with the Sony 70-300 mm, of which there really is not much to complain about. But as a professional photographer, I would maybe prefer the Sony 70-400 mm . The larger zoom range makes that lens more unique than the Sony 70-300 mm. In terms of optical performance they are very similar.
Pros: High resolution and low chromatic aberration over the entire zoom range
Cons: No real cons, considerations are:, Distortion and vignetting could be corrected better, Limited luminosity for a professional lens, Large lens hood not handy
