High Quality General Purpose Zoom

Archi, Sony
19 March 2014
  • Summary: I purchased this lens as an upgrade to my Sony 18-70 mm kit lens that came with my Alpha. I am very pleased with quality of pictures I am getting with it. The pictures are sharp at both ends of the zoom range and corner to corner at wide apertures. The colors are rendered a little cool, but nothing which cannot be corrected by post processing.

Sony 16-80Z Varop Sonnar

Archi, B&H Photo
6 March 2014
  • Excerpt: I have used this lens for nearly an year, and most of my pictures were for travel, and a few closeup macro type shots. I had previously been using a Sony 18-70 mm kit zoom lens, which was satisfactory, both in picture sharpness and colour. However, when I started using the 16-80 lens, first thing I noticed was it's sharpness of image, edge to edge even at wide open apertures.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Poor in Low Light, Slow Focus

Great lens optically

win32forth, Amazon
13 November 2013
  • Summary: Excellent optically, but could have used a lens lock for travel, to prevent the zoom from migrating to the 80mm focal length while you a re carrying it.

Good but not so much for the price

Cristian Fiedler Seebach "C.Fiedler", Amazon
13 November 2013
  • Summary: Actually I expected better light quality for the price. In low light condition autofocus is a real mess and it seems to be silly...

Exactly what I needed

Amateur Chris, B&H Photo
14 August 2013
  • Excerpt: This lens functions as my primary lens. For an amateur who is just starting to really get into photography, this lens provides an ideal focal/zoom range. Upgrading to this from the kit lens provides an amazing leap in picture quality. Colors, clarity, and overall sharpness are miles ahead of a kit lens. That being said, the autofocus is somewhat noisy and the aperture craps out at f3.5.
  • Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Heavy

Thought ill be getting more

Ali Zaher Al-harthy, Amazon
13 July 2013
  • Summary: I put it on my A-77 but it looked cheap. The kit lens looks much more better. With the kit lens the flash doesn't pop up but with this one it dose every time I'm indoors or even in the shade.

I was prepared to be Wowd

Raymond Monk, Amazon
18 June 2013
  • Summary: This is my first piece of Ziess Glass. now Ziess made the glass I wish they made the entire thing. I agree with other post that when at 16 mm there is quite a bit of lens shadow (vignetting) at the edges of the photo. Zeiss themselves would have made sure that lens was perfect at any focal length. I rated it at a 4 for this reason.

My basic lens

Bob a77, Adorama
14 June 2013
  • Excerpt: This is my go to lens. Sharp! Great lens Stays on my a77. Landscapes are beautiful, great with grand kids as can stay far enough back so they are natural. Color is superb! There is no purple fringing and distortion is non-existent when using Lightroom with this lens checked. I could not get a better lens with this focal range for the price!
  • Pros: Color, Consistent Output, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Rugged
