Summary: This has become my primary lens on my A580. It covers most of the range that I need, with the exception of long range wildlife photos. The images are very sharp at full magnification, nearly as sharp as my best 50mm prime lens.
The BEST "walk-around" zoom lens for the APS-C size sensor:
2 May 2013
Summary: I have the 18-200, 18-250 and the 18-270 and 3 other old smaller zooms... At first, I missed the 18-270's reach, but once I got acquainted with 16 end of the lens, I realized what I was missing... I was walking closer to my subjects. The 16-105 is the first that almost matches the picture quality of my 7 prime lenses, of course it can't match the open aperture of my 1.4 lenses, but it comes close at simular settings.
Summary: We bought a similar lens off craigslist. Was shocked at the difference between the lenses. This gives crisp clear pictures. It is a lot of money, but slightly blurry pictures aren't worth anything.
Best zoom lens for SONY Alpha APS-C cameras for this price
2 December 2012
Summary: This is definitely one of the best lenses for SONY Alpha APS-C cameras. It produces good pictures even at minimum aperture values for any focus lengths between 16-105mm. This is quite unusual for zoom lenses, especially with such zoom factor (about 6.56x). Most of them produce big aberrations and distortions - this statement is definitely not concern with SAL16105. It has fast-focus and good colors.
Summary: I got the SAL16105 used on ebay as an upgrade to the kit lens SAL1855 for the Sony Alpha a65. After a lot of research and comparison to the Zeiss SAL1680z, I decided to go for this lens. The primary reason was the cost and better range for travel use. Used prices for this lens are about half the price of the Zeiss. After a couple of days of shooting I am impressed by the image quality.
Excerpt: I purchased the lens with the a580 because it was reviewed as one of Sony's better lenses, and because I liked the 35mm equivalent of 24mm at the widest angle. The lens has had a lot of use for about a year, and so far no problems. Like all wide-angle zooms, it needs to be held level when at 16mm to avoid distortion. In my opinion, it's a fine lens.
Pros: Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice zoom range
