Excellent, not for cheaper or plastic is bad to photographers
12 November 2013
Summary: First: is fragile, so you must to use carefully. After this, and his plastic concept, the lens is fantastic, very light and smallest, fast focus, exceptional 16mm angle with just a very little distortion which is intrascendent for normal pictures, with very nice colours and contrast. Cheaper, what more..? If some day it will broke is easy buy another new.
Summary: The pancake is a portable casual option for the Sony NEX line. It takes sharp imagines and has performed well with whatever I throw it at. The wide angle distortion makes taking close-up pictures of people kind of weird if you don't know what you're doing, but for all else it's a good choice for auto features and compactness.
Summary: We picked this lens up for my wife's Nex-5r and so far it has replaced the kit lens that came with it as her primary. The fact that it is half the size and black instead of silver really downplays this camera which makes her happy because she can carry and pocket it easier (and me happier because I don't want to carry a "professional" looking camera around looking like one of "those" guys).
Summary: My copy of this lens is great, but I feel like the 18-55 kit lens that came with my NEX-5N was up to a bit percent sharper. I wouldn't go back, though, because I don't know if I could design better default behavior for the zoom/focus ring. I've always shot in DMF (dynamic manual focus) and was a little worried that if I had the ring set to control the zoom I wouldn't be able to control focus.
Summary: This is one of the best lens ever. IF you like taking everyday-life photos, nothing is more suitable than this. Since I had this lens, I can take a lot of videos especially in the low light conditions. The price is not too high. Anyway, it í very good lens for you when you thinking about everyday-life videos.
Summary: It COMPLETES my NEX-5R. I always have problem with NEX series since the stock lens just really bulky. This pancake lens works really great. It does drain battery faster though because the zoom motor.
Excerpt: Optics:
This is NOT a critically sharp lens.
It has ok sharpness, pretty much on the same level with other kit zooms on the market. Terrible fisheye-like distortion at 16mm, probably the worst I've seen, this is the main aspect of criticism on the internet.
But to be fair, this issue is corrected in camera with newer bodies or newer firmwares right up to the preview level. So you won't notice it at all, whether after capture or when you're framing.
Pros: cheap, Consistent Output, Durable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Lightweight
