A decent wide zoom lens, but you'll eventually want to upgrade.

Summary: I've been using this lens with an A300 for the last 6 months and it has worked reliably during this time and has taken some very nice pictures. That said, I've recently upgraded to a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 (~$500 new on Amazon) and there is a large difference in quality, but the Tamron is much more expensive. The main problem with this lens is edge blur and soft centers at the wide (18mm) end and dull/low-contrast pictures at the far (70mm) end.
Summary: this is the basic lens that comes with all the Sony Alpha cameras, its not great, but serves its purpose as a starter lens.the 18-70mm is good for indoor close-ups you cant get with bigger lenses.Buying from E-bay instead of getting with the camera as a package makes sense as I saved over 75% off the package price.later down the line when I can save up for a 400$ lens .I'll pass on the deal to someone else ,just starting their camera kit.
Summary: I bought this lens to replace a Sigma 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 macro lens. I have upgraded from a 35mm K-M SLR to the Sony alpha 100, and was using the older camera's lenses until I could afford to replace them. The first thing I noticed with this lens is the different focusing ring, which has no markings on it. This makes zone focusing impossible.
Summary: Its light, plasticky and has a rather poor maximum aperture at the longer focal lengths. However, it does have a better than usual range of focal lengths and comes almost free with many Sony dSLRs. Stopped down performance is OK and it works well for general use in good light. Most other brands of entry level kit lens are criticised for similar inadequacies so this probably compares.
