Summary: The Sony Alpha SEL1855 E-mount 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS Lens is an outstanding "kit" zoom lens for Sony E Mount cameras like the NEX. I have achieved results with this lens that, quite frankly, I would have thought impossible for such a modestly priced lens. I say "outstanding" with one very serious qualifier. That is that you accept that the lens is, in many ways, very mediocre in straight optical terms, but a stellar performer if digitally corrected in post production.
Summary: This kit lens is the best KIT lens I ever used (comparing to Nikon, Canon kit lenses with similar zoom range). Optics is very good, although nowhere close to prime lens sharpness. The main issue is the build quality. I only took one trip to national park and it gets dust sparkles in it. I always kept it in camera bag and took very care of it. There seems no dust/weather seal. Hope Sony can improve the quality control.
Summary: Sony makes a 16-50 lens that is physically smaller and incorporates a power zoom that would usually be a better choice for most users. I happened to have an unusual requirement that "forced" me to buy this lens and I'm happy with its performance. That stated, I still revert to the 16-50 power zoom or the 55-210 zoom for every-day use.
Summary: I purchased my Sony DSLR with ann 18-135 zoom and it is the best "vacation lens" for my type of photography. However, I also like to do macro work so I needed a solution for that problem. This kit lens is very good for filling in the gap. I have been pleased with the quality of the photos I took using it.
Summary: When the lense arrived at my house it was loose in the box. There was a small Amount of bubble wrap in the box plus some green bubble pack too. I'm assuming the small bubble wrap was meant to be around the lense but it wasn't. It was pathetic packaging. Then when I took the lense out of the box there was a big finger print on the glass of the lense. Man O man what a pitiful way to mail a camera lense.
Summary: This lens gets a bad rap. Mostly, but not entirely, undeserved. First, who is this lens not for? Anyone who needs a compact lens should buy the 16-50 power zoom, 16mm or 20mm pancake, or Sigma 19mm or 30mm. This lens is not compact, but it's not huge. Anyone who needs top notch image quality should buy a prime NEX lens. Other than the 16mm, they are optically much better than the available zooms.
Summary: I bought this lense for my spare Sony a55 so I don't wear my A77 and expensive lenses. I use this camera for everyday use and it does the job. It is not the greatest lens but it works and that if anything happens to it I won't be crying. Compare to the other lenses I have its not as sharp as I wanted it to be, but again it still take good picture with my Sony a55 The shipping also was fast and packed good. I would recomend this lense for everyday use.
